- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Baxter is not part of Maine's state park system. Percival Baxter gave the land to the state in 1931 on the condition that it stay forever wild, and the authority that runs it still enforces that: no paved roads, no potable water, no hunting of moose, and a hard cap on vehicles at the gates. Mount Katahdin, Maine's highest peak at 5,269 ft, is the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. Most visitors come to climb it; the rest of the park is forest, ponds and moose country reached on dirt roads.

Time out
Finding the local time zone…
Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- The Abol Bridge lookout on Golden Road is a roadside view with no climbing.
- Katahdin trails and most park paths are rough, steep and not suitable for limited mobility.
Visiting lightly
- Stay on marked rock above treeline so alpine plants can regrow.
- Pack out all rubbish; there is no potable water and little infrastructure.
- Keep food secured so bears and moose do not become camp raiders.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to enter Baxter State Park?
Day-use entry is free; there is no per-person gate fee. You pay for camping (roughly US$20–40 a night for a tent site in 2026, more for cabins) and any reservations. Confirm current rates with the park authority before you go.
What are the best hikes in Baxter State Park?
Mount Katahdin via the Hunt Trail is the classic climb (8–12 h). The Knife Edge is the exposed ridge route for experienced hikers (10–14 h). For something easier, the Abol Bridge lookout gives a roadside view of the mountain, and low-elevation forest and pond paths suit a half day.
When is the best time to visit Baxter State Park?
June and September: long days, cooler weather and fewer people than July–August, when the gates fill early. Foliage peaks late September to early October, and camping season ends 15 October.
Do I need a reservation to camp?
Yes for many sites. Camping runs 15 May–15 Oct at the park's 337 sites, and summer weekends book out months ahead. Winter camping (1 Dec–31 Mar) is discouraged but some sites can be reserved.
Can I climb Katahdin in winter?
Yes, but you must submit an application to the park at least 10 days before the climb. Winter conditions on the summit are severe and the route is for experienced mountaineers.
Is there water or food in the park?
No. There is no potable water, so treat or filter everything you drink, and bring your own food and cooking gear. In cabins, cook outside.
