- The brightly painted corrugated-metal houses began as workers' housing near the old port, built from scrap and ship paint by Genoese and other immigrant dockworkers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
- The look is now maintained deliberately for visitors: painters and photo-opportunity performers work the street, and some will ask for a tip after a photo.
- This is a single pedestrianised stretch plus a couple of adjoining museum blocks, not a barrio you explore freely: treat it as a planned stop, not a place to wander off-route.
