Cumberland Falls is a 65 ft (20 m) curtain of water on the Cumberland River, inside a Kentucky state resort park that sits within Daniel Boone National Forest. The falls are the draw, but the park also holds 17 mi (27 km) of trails, a lodge, cottages and a campground. On full-moon dates the spray throws a moonbow — one of the few places on earth where this happens regularly. There is no entrance fee; you pay for lodging, camping, rafting and the pool.

What are the best hikes in Cumberland Falls State Resort Park?
The Eagle Falls trail is the pick: about 2.5 mi (4 km) round trip into the gorge to a second waterfall and the river, 2–3 hours, moderate. The Dog Slaughter Falls trail is quieter and similar in length. The falls overlook itself is a 20-minute paved walk. All 17 mi (27 km) of park trails connect to Daniel Boone National Forest paths.
When is the best time to visit Cumberland Falls State Resort Park?
April, May and October: high or steady water, mild weather and manageable crowds. March brings the strongest flow. July and August are hot and busy, so arrive before 10:00. Winter is quiet but icy on the gorge trails.
Can I see the moonbow?
Only around full-moon dates, when moonlight hits the spray at the right angle. It is weather-dependent — cloud or low water cancels it. Check the park's moonbow calendar and plan a night either side of the full moon.
Do I need a reservation to camp or stay in the lodge?
Yes in practice for weekends and holidays. Camping has a two-night minimum then, and the campground is open March 15–November 15. Lodge rooms, cottages and woodland rooms are bookable up to a year ahead and open year round.
Is Cumberland Falls the same as Niagara?
No. It is often nicknamed the Niagara of the South, but it is 65 ft (20 m) tall and 125 ft (38 m) wide — far smaller. Its real distinction is the moonbow.
