Undara is a single-reason stop: the lava tubes, a system of hollow tunnels 10–30 m across that carried lava tens of kilometres from its source and drained to leave roofed caves. The national park itself has no entry fee and no self-guided tube access — every visit to the tubes is on a licensed guided tour booked through Undara Experience at the park edge. That makes the trip a package decision, not a hiking one: about 3–3.5 h from Cairns via the Atherton Tablelands or 5–5.5 h from Townsville on outback roads, with the Savannahlander train and a coach connection from Mount Surprise as the car-free option. The surrounding country is dry savanna woodland; the damp tube interiors and collapse areas hold vine thickets with Gondwanan links, and the caves shelter microbats, including a biologically rich assemblage in one cave. The Ewamian people are the traditional owners. Go in the dry season, May to September, and treat the drive itself as the risk: fuel, water and road conditions first.
