- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Ocala National Forest is the oldest national forest east of the Mississippi and holds the world's largest stand of sand pines, growing on dry, sandy soil where few other trees reach timber size. What most visitors come for is water: Juniper, Alexander and Salt Springs are first-magnitude springs pumping out millions of gallons a day at a steady 22 °C (72 °F) year-round, with developed swimming areas, boardwalks and campgrounds. Entry to the forest itself is free; you pay per person only at the developed spring recreation areas. The trade-off is heat and storms: from June to September the springs fill by mid-morning and afternoon lightning is routine, so the practical visit is a spring swim before 10:00 plus a short trail, or the 22-mile Paisley Woods bike loop if you want distance.

Park rules

- Camping
- Developed sites need a reservation; backcountry camping is tents only, pack in and pack out.
- Fires

- Hunting
- Hunting is allowed in season in parts of the forest; check dates and wear bright colours in autumn and winter.

Time out
Finding the local time zone…
Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- Juniper Springs, Alexander Springs and Salt Springs have paved paths, boardwalks and accessible restrooms.
- The spring pools have steps or ramps into the water at the developed areas.
- The Paisley Woods bike trail and backcountry trails are sandy and not suitable for wheelchairs.
Visiting lightly
- Pack out all rubbish; the springs have no bins in some areas.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen or none at all in the spring pools — the water is drinking water for downstream towns.
- Keep to marked trails in the scrub; sand-pine seedlings are easily crushed.
- Do not feed wildlife, and never leave food in a tent.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to enter Ocala National Forest?
Nothing. There is no fee to drive forest roads or walk most trails. You pay only at the developed spring recreation areas — Juniper, Alexander, Salt and Silver Glen — where day use is roughly US$10–15 per person (2026 estimate; rates differ by site and vehicle, so check before you go).
What are the best hikes in Ocala National Forest?
The short nature trails at Juniper Springs and Alexander Springs are the easiest. The two-mile Lake George Trail from Silver Glen Springs follows the shoreline to a pier. For distance, the Paisley Woods Bicycle Trail runs about 22 miles with shorter loops from the halfway point — it is sandy, so a mountain or gravel bike works better than a road bike.
When is the best time to visit Ocala National Forest?
March, April, October and November: warm days, lower humidity and fewer people. June to September is hot and stormy, and the springs fill by mid-morning. Winter is quiet and mild, though the spring water feels cold at around 22 °C.
Do I need a reservation to camp?
Yes for the developed campgrounds, which can be booked through Recreation.gov or by phone. Backcountry camping is tents only, leave-no-trace, with no general permit system. Spring and holiday weekends fill well ahead.
Can I swim in the springs?
Yes, at the developed recreation areas — Juniper, Alexander, Salt and Silver Glen — in the marked pool areas. The water stays near 22 °C (72 °F) all year. Do not swim in undeveloped spring runs or rivers; alligators are present throughout the forest.
Is Ocala National Forest the same as Osceola National Forest?
No. Ocala is the large forest in North Central Florida between Ocala, Palatka and the SR 40 corridor. Osceola National Forest lies further north near Lake City and the Georgia line.
