Meru Betiri is a 50,000-hectare coastal park in southeast East Java, reached only by 4WD or truck over the last 50 km of unbridged fords. Its draw is Sukamade beach, where green, hawksbill, olive ridley and occasionally leatherback turtles come ashore almost every night of the year, and where a long-running hatchery and tagging programme works. Teluk Hijau (Green Bay) and Bandealit beach are the other reasons to come. It is remote, wet from December to March, and has almost no visitor infrastructure beyond one guesthouse.

Visiting lightly
- Follow the rangers' light and distance rules — a disturbed turtle may abandon the nest.
- Do not buy eggs, shells or turtle products anywhere on the route.
- Bring cash and buy meals and drinks at Sukamade so the village and the ranger programme benefit.
- Skip civet coffee (kopi luwak) if you cannot confirm the civets are wild; caged production is widely criticised.

How much does it cost to enter Meru Betiri National Park?
Park entry is roughly Rp10,000–50,000 per person depending on whether you pay the Indonesian or foreign rate (2026 estimate, check). Add the night turtle watch with a ranger, often Rp50,000–150,000 per person, and the 4WD, about Rp400,000–800,000 per vehicle per day plus fuel. The Sukamade guesthouse is about Rp80,000–200,000 a room.
What are the best hikes in Meru Betiri National Park?
There are no summit trails. The walks that matter are the Teluk Hijau (Green Bay) path along the cliffs to a white-sand bay, and the forest and beach walking at Bandealit, including the short route to the Gua Jepang bunker and the small lake. Interior forest routes need a guide. Most visitors come for the night turtle watch at Sukamade rather than for hiking.
When is the best time to visit Meru Betiri National Park?
April to September, in the dry season. December to March is wet, the rivers that cross the access road can be impassable and the 4WD route becomes unreliable. Turtles nest on Sukamade almost every night of the year, so the season affects the road, not the wildlife.
Can I visit Sukamade as a day trip from Banyuwangi?
Yes, but it means 4–5 hours each way over rough road and a return very late at night, because the turtle watch happens in darkness. Staying one night at Sukamade is the better plan and the only way to see the beach and hatchery in daylight too.
Do I need a 4WD to reach Meru Betiri?
For the last 50 km, yes. The road is rough and crosses rivers at fords with no bridges, so a normal car will not make it. Hire a 4WD with a driver in Banyuwangi, or take a truck transfer arranged by a Kalibaru guesthouse.
Will I definitely see a turtle?
No. Turtles come ashore on most nights of the year, but nesting is unpredictable and rangers will not disturb an animal that turns back. Go with the rangers, follow the light rules and treat a sighting as luck rather than a guarantee.
