Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Nordic countries ↗Decide light or dark before anything else: summer trips (June–August) and aurora trips (September–March in the Arctic) need different countries, clothes and bases.
- Nordic countries ↗Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland and the Faroes sell stronger alcohol only in state shops with short hours; buy before evening and before Sundays and holidays.
- Finland ↗Finland is in the EU and the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border.
- Finland ↗The land border with Russia is closed to travellers; do not plan a route across it.
- Finland ↗Everyman's rights let you walk, camp for a night and pick berries on most land, but not near homes, and not to make fires without permission.

Kurjenrahka protects a raised bog — the "crane bog" — plus lakes, wetland forest and the old-growth Pukkipalo, about 35 km north of Turku in Finland Proper. There is no gate and no entry fee. The Kuhankuono trail network links the park with the Vaskijärvi nature reserve and runs all the way to Turku, so you can walk in from the city or arrive by bus, coach, bike or car. Trails are flat, duckboarded over the wet sections, and usable year-round with the right footwear; in winter some become skiing tracks.

- Free entry and no booking — the main cost is getting there.
- The Kuhankuono trail network has roughly 300 km of marked routes, from a 1.7 km accessible circle to a 25–30 km loop around the park. The Kuhankuono trail network has roughly 186 mi of marked routes, from a 1.1 mi accessible circle to a 16–19 mi loop around the park.
- Old-growth Pukkipalo and the 1381 Kuhankuono border stone give the walk a second reason beyond the birds.

Accessibility
- The Kurjenpesä yard, including the outhouse toilets, is wheelchair accessible, and the gravel road from the bus stop is no problem.

- Use maintained campfire sites and carry out everything you bring in.
- Buy the trail map and use local services at Rantapiha so the area keeps its maintenance funding.

What are the best hikes in Kurjenrahka National Park?
For a first visit, the 6 km Savojärvi circle from Kurjenpesä or Rantapiha, about 2 hours. The 1.7 km Karpalopolku circle is the accessible option. The 6 km Pukkipalo and Takaniitunvuori loop adds old-growth forest and a hill view, and the 19 km Vaskijärvi circle is the long day.
When is the best time to visit Kurjenrahka National Park?

Can I get there without a car?
Yes. Föli buses 21 and 23 run from Turku to the Kuhankuono park entrance on summer weekends and holidays, and otherwise to Tortinmäki village 6 km away. Coaches towards Pori stop at Kuhankuono year-round, 700 m from the Kurjenpesä hut. Marked trails also reach the park from Turku on foot or by bike.
Can I camp or stay overnight in the park?
Lean-to shelters are free to use and tents are allowed at some locations. Rantapiha, on the Savojärvi trail, has camping, a wood-fired sauna and boat rental. Turku is 35 km away if you want a hotel.
