Destination OS · Lagoon mornings, cirque hikes at dawn

Saint-GillesSaint-Gilles-les-Bains

Saint-Gilles is the west-coast beach base: swim in the lagoon zones only, keep the early morning for hikes inland, hire a car for anything beyond the coast strip, and check the sea and cyclone alerts before every plan.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • African islands ↗Sleep on the island you fly home from the night before your long-haul departure; inter-island flights and ferries in this region are cancelled or rescheduled often enough to break a same-day connection.
  • African islands ↗In the Indian Ocean islands book flexible rates for December to March: a cyclone warning can shut airports, ferries and roads for two or three days.
  • Réunion ↗Réunion is French and in the EU but outside the Schengen area: a Schengen visa does not automatically cover it. Check the French government's entry rules for Réunion for your passport.
  • Réunion ↗Swimming and surfing are restricted on much of the coast because of shark risk; swim only in the lagoon and supervised zones.
  • Réunion ↗Access to Piton de la Fournaise closes during eruptions and alerts; check the prefecture's current status before you go.
  • West coast ↗Swim only in the lagoon and supervised zones; shark-risk bans are enforced along the coast.

Who it suits, the trade-offs and when to go

Overview

The city in one paragraph, who it fits, and how many days it takes.

Saint-Gilles-les-Bains is a resort strip on Réunion's west coast: a marina and promenade, the L'Hermitage lagoon to the south and Boucan Canot beach to the north. It is the dry, sunny side of the island and the usual base for the lagoon, but the cirques and the volcano are a winding drive away and cloud closes the peaks by late morning. Shark risk restricts swimming on most of the coast, so the lagoon and supervised zones are the places to swim. A hire car makes the island work; the four clusters here cover the coast for two or three days.

Fits

  • Beach and lagoon trips
  • Car trips with hikes
  • Short stays before the cirques

Does not fit

  • Travellers who cannot hire a car
  • Anyone who plans to swim outside the lagoon
  • Midday hikers (cloud and heat)

Don't confuse
Saint-Gilles-les-Bains is the resort strip on the coast; Saint-Gilles-les-Hauts is the village in the hills above it.

  • Boucan Canot: North-beach cluster: a busy beach at the foot of the cliffs; the sea is rough, so look and check the flags before any swim.
  • Saint-Paul market: Morning cluster: the seafront market and the old town of Saint-Paul; go early and take a car, market days are field-verified.
  • Sleep area L'Hermitage: suits Families, older travellers, price band $$.

Decide

The honest trade-off: what you will enjoy, what will wear you down.

You will like

  • Lagoon swimming and snorkelling
  • Markets and Creole food
  • A base for early-morning hikes

You will hate

  • Shark-ban swimming rules
  • Cloud that closes the peaks by midday
  • Winding mountain roads

Arrive & move

Getting in, getting around, and your bags

Arrive

Gateways

Each gateway has its own airport-to-bed page with timings and the last safe connection.

Move

The default way around, when a pass pays off, and when the last trains go.

Default
Walk inside a cluster; hire car between clusters.
Passes
No pass. A hire car pays for itself if you go inland; taxis are costly and few after dark.
Last trains
No rail. Buses on the coast road run limited hours: field-verify before relying on one.

Luggage

Where big bags are a problem, and how to get rid of them for the day.

Rule

Sand, kerbs and heat: large suitcases go from the car to the door, never on a walk.
Lockers
Few public lockers; hotels and rental desks hold bags.
Forwarding
No forwarding culture; keep the big bag at your base for cirque nights.
Dead zone
Late-flight day: ask the hotel to hold bags and for a shower; a car return desk may close early.

Safety basics, the lines not to cross, and practical habits that save the day.

Safety

  • Sea: swim only in the lagoon or supervised zones; obey the flags and local bans.
  • Mountain weather changes fast: rain gear, water and a charged phone; leave early and tell someone your route.
  • Roads: winding and narrow inland; do not drive tired after a flight.

  • Emergency: 112 (EU-wide), 15 medical, 17 police, 18 fire.

Red lines

  • Say bonjour when entering a shop or small restaurant.
  • Réunion is multi-faith: cover up and remove shoes at temples when asked.
  • Do not leave valuables visible in a parked hire car.

Practical

  • Tap water is generally drinkable; ask if unsure.
  • Toilets: cafés, beach facilities and the marina.
