Whanganui National Park protects the middle reaches of the Whanganui River — the longest navigable river in New Zealand — plus the forested hill country around it, on the western side of the North Island between Taumarunui and Whanganui. There are no entrance gates and no entry fee. The park's signature trip is the Whanganui Journey, one of New Zealand's Great Walks, which is done by canoe or kayak rather than on foot. The Bridge to Nowhere, a road bridge built in the 1930s for a settlement that never happened, is the best-known sight and is reached by river or by a long forest walk.

Drive north on State Highway 4 to Pipiriki, the main river access point.

Accessibility
- The Bridge to Nowhere track from Mangapurua Landing is benched and mostly gentle, but the only way there is by boat.
- The Atene Skyline Track is rough forest track and not suitable for wheelchairs or limited mobility.
- Pipiriki and the road ends have basic parking and toilets; there are no paved paths into the park.
Visiting lightly
- Book with DOC huts and campsites so fees go back into track and hut maintenance.
- Carry out all rubbish, including food scraps, and use the toilets at huts and campsites.
- Do not feed eels or birds, and keep to the track to protect seedlings.
- Use a shuttle or a full canoe so fewer vehicles run the access roads.

What are the best hikes in Whanganui National Park?
The Bridge to Nowhere walk from Mangapurua Landing is the short classic — about 40 minutes each way on a benched track. The Atene Skyline Track is the best full-day forest walk, 12.5 km with valley views. The multi-day Whanganui Journey is done by canoe, not on foot.
When is the best time to visit Whanganui National Park?
February, March and November: settled weather, a warm river and fewer people than in December and January. June to August is cold and wet with high river levels, and some transport operators run reduced services.
Do I need a permit to paddle the Whanganui River?
No permit, but you must book Whanganui Journey huts or campsites with DOC before you start, and arrange your canoe hire and shuttle in advance. Summer beds sell out weeks ahead.
How do I get to the Bridge to Nowhere?
Most people take a jetboat from Pipiriki to Mangapurua Landing — about 30 minutes — then walk about 40 minutes to the bridge. You can also reach it by canoe on the Whanganui Journey, or on foot from the nearest road, which takes about 3 hours.
Can I drive into Whanganui National Park?
No. Roads reach the edges at Pipiriki, Whakahoro and the Atene valley, but the park interior is river and forest only. Access is by boat, canoe or on foot.
