Know before you go
- Jingshan ("Prospect Hill") was built from earth and rock excavated from the Forbidden City's moats when the palace was built in the early 15th century, and was designed as feng shui protection for the palace against evil spirits believed to come from the north.
- The central summit pavilion, Wanchun Pavilion, gives the single best rooftop view over the Forbidden City's golden roofs — most visitors rate it above any view from inside the palace itself.
- The Chongzhen Emperor, the last Ming emperor, is said to have hanged himself from a tree near the hill's east side in 1644 (≈ US$250) as Beijing fell to rebel forces; a marker notes the traditional site.
