- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
- Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
- Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
- Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
- Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.

Jasmund is Germany's smallest national park: 30 km² of chalk cliff and old beech forest on the coast of Rügen, founded in 1990 and listed by UNESCO in 2011 as part of Europe's ancient beech forests. There is no gate and no entrance fee — the only fixed costs are parking at the Königsstuhl National Park Centre or the €4 day ticket at Weddingstraße in Sassnitz. The reason to come is the Hochuferweg, the signed cliff-edge path between Sassnitz and Lohme, which passes the Wissower Klinken and the 118 m Königsstuhl. Walk it one way and take the bus back. The park is small enough to cover properly in a day, which makes it an easy add-on to a Rügen stay rather than a trip in itself.

Why go
- The chalk cliffs are the reason to come: 100 m-plus walls of white rock dropping straight into the Baltic, seen from the cliff-edge path rather than from a boat.
- The Hochuferweg is a genuine day walk with a bus at each end, so you can walk it one way and ride back.
- Old beech forest on the plateau behind the cliffs, part of a UNESCO-listed forest network that stretches across Europe.
- It is small enough to see properly in a day, which makes it an easy add-on to a Rügen stay.

Time out
Finding the local time zone…
Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- The Königsstuhl National Park Centre, its car park and the exhibition are step-free and reachable by bus.
- The path from the centre to the Königsstuhl platform is partly boardwalk and partly stepped; check the current route before relying on it.
- The Hochuferweg between Sassnitz and Lohme is steep, stepped and not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.
Visiting lightly
- Take the bus from Sassnitz instead of driving; parking inside the park is deliberately limited.
- Stay on the marked path so the beech forest floor and the chalk edge are not worn away.
- Carry out everything you bring in; bins are scarce on the cliff path.
- Buy lunch in Sassnitz or Lohme rather than at the cliff, so the villages keep the income.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to enter Jasmund National Park?
Nothing. There is no entrance fee and no gate. You pay only for parking — roughly €8–12 per car per day at the Königsstuhl National Park Centre, or €4 for the day ticket at Weddingstraße in Sassnitz (2026 estimate). The cliff platform and exhibition at the centre are ticketed separately; check the current price.
What are the best hikes in Jasmund National Park?
The Hochuferweg is the one to do: about 8 km of cliff-edge path from Sassnitz to Königsstuhl, 2–3 hours, moderate. Continue to Lohme for a quieter second half of the same path. If the cliff path is crowded, the short marked beech forest loops from the centre are easy alternatives.
When is the best time to visit Jasmund National Park?
May and September. Both give long days and workable crowds; July and August bring coach groups and parking pressure, and November to February is grey, damp and short on daylight. The beech is greenest in May and turns in October.
Can I walk from Sassnitz to the Königsstuhl?
Yes. The Hochuferweg starts in Sassnitz and runs along the cliff edge to the Königsstuhl centre in 2–3 hours. Buses run back from the centre to Sassnitz town, so you do not have to walk it both ways.
Is the Königsstuhl platform worth paying for?
The cliff view from the path is free and close. The platform and exhibition at the centre are a paid extra, useful if you want the managed view and the background on the chalk and the beech forest; check the current price and opening before counting on it.
Can I swim below the chalk cliffs?
Not safely. The shore below the cliffs is reached by steep, rough routes, the chalk is unstable and there is no lifeguard. Swim at the beaches in Sassnitz or further along the Rügen coast instead.
