Ivvavik protects the British Mountains and the Firth River on Yukon's north coast, the calving side of the Porcupine caribou herd, and the first Canadian national park created from an Indigenous land claim (Inuvialuit Final Agreement, 1984). It is one of the least-visited parks in Canada — 179 visitors in 2022–23 — because there is no road in: you fly from Inuvik, register with Parks Canada, and navigate by map and landmark. Trips are short-season, weather-dependent and expensive; plan them as an expedition, not a stop on a Yukon road trip.

There are no designated trails. The usual routes are the Firth River corridor from Margaret Lake to the Beaufort Sea delta, tundra walking out of Sheep Creek, and ridge walks in the British Mountains from a base camp. You must submit a route plan on 1:50,000 maps and register in Inuvik before you fly in.
When is the best time to visit Ivvavik National Park?
The hiking season runs from mid-June to mid-August. Late June and early July bring wildflowers and the Porcupine caribou migration; the third week of August is the autumn-colour window, but expect winter-like conditions and fog delays. Outside those weeks there is no practical visitor access.
Can I visit Ivvavik National Park without a guide?
Yes, if you are an experienced expedition traveller. You still need the mandatory Parks Canada orientation in Inuvik, trip registration and a detailed route plan. Most visitors instead book the Parks Canada fly-in base camp or a commercial Firth River rafting trip.
How do I get to Ivvavik National Park?
Fly or drive to Inuvik in the Northwest Territories, complete the Parks Canada orientation, then take a charter aircraft about 200 km east into the park. Common landing points are Sheep Creek, Margaret Lake, Komakuk Beach and Stokes Point. There are no roads into the park.
Is Ivvavik the same as Vuntut National Park?
No. They share a boundary in northern Yukon, but Vuntut lies to the south-east and is also roadless and undeveloped. Ivvavik is reached from Inuvik; Vuntut is normally reached from Old Crow.
