Heathcote National Park is the bush behind the train line south of Sydney: sandstone ridges, heath, eucalypt and a chain of rock pools and small lakes in the valleys, all inside the city's rail network. No private vehicles are allowed inside, so every visit starts on foot from Heathcote or Waterfall station. Entry is free, the walking is rough in places, and there is no shop, no cafe and no drinking water — carry everything. Most people pair it with Royal National Park, which shares the same ridge to the east.

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- The tracks are rough sandstone and dirt with steps and creek crossings; there is no sealed or wheelchair-accessible trail in the park.
- The nearest accessible facilities and flat walking are at the station towns and in Royal National Park to the east.
Visiting lightly
- Stay on the track: the heath and hanging swamps around the pools recover slowly from trampling.
- Carry out all rubbish, including food scraps, and do not wash in the rock pools.
- Book camping online so the parks service can cap numbers at the two small campgrounds.

How much does it cost to enter Heathcote National Park?
Nothing. There is no entry fee, no gate and no ticket machine, and private vehicles are not allowed inside. You pay only your train fare to Heathcote or Waterfall station (about A$5–8 from Sydney Central, 2026 estimate). Walk-in camping at Kingfisher Pool and Lake Eckersley is also free but must be booked online with NSW National Parks in advance.
What are the best hikes in Heathcote National Park?
Bullawarring walking track is the main one: about 5.5 km one way, 3–3.5 h, linking the Heathcote and Waterfall sides past Kingfisher Pool. For something shorter, Lake Toolooma trail (about 5 km return, 2–3 h) and Mooray walking track (about 5 km return) are easier. All are rough underfoot, so allow more time than the signs suggest.
When is the best time to visit Heathcote National Park?
March to May and September to November: mild, mostly dry, and the heath is in flower in spring. January and February are hot and humid with afternoon storms, and December to February is bushfire season — check the fire danger rating before you set out. Winter days are cool and clear but short.
Can I drive into Heathcote National Park?
No. Private vehicles are prohibited inside the park and there is no road in. Enter on foot from Oliver Street at Heathcote or the northern end of Warrabin Street at Waterfall, both a short walk from the train stations.
Is there anywhere to eat or buy water in the park?
No. There are no cafes, kiosks or shops in the park and no drinking water. Buy food and water in Heathcote, Waterfall or the Sutherland Shire before you walk in, and carry out all your rubbish.
