Preston is a former textile and engineering town on the River Ribble, made a city in 2002, with a Grade I listed museum, a Georgian square and two riverside parks. Most travellers see it in a day or use its station as a junction on the west coast main line. It works as a base for the Ribble Valley, Blackpool and the southern Lake District, but the town itself is a half-day to one-day stop, not a destination week.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: railway station to the Harris is about 10 min on foot. Preston Bus and Stagecoach run town routes (12, 43 and 100 link the bus and railway stations; 19, 49 and 6 go to Deepdale). Taxis and Uber operate; two Park & Ride sites (Portway and Walton-le-Dale) serve drivers.

Watch out

Safety

A normal British city: watch for pickpockets around Fishergate at night, keep to lit streets, and expect rain any month. The main nuisance risks are late-night drinkers and unlit riverside paths after dark.
  • Two stations: the bus station (Brutalist, 1968) and the railway station are about 10 min apart on foot — don't mix them up.
  • Lancashire Infantry Museum is on an active army base: photo ID required, and non-UK visitors should phone ahead.
  • Ribble Steam Railway runs on selected days, mainly Apr–Sep: check before travelling.
  • Some listed taxi and car-hire firms have closed or changed numbers: book through a current operator.
