  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.
  • Atlantic Canada ↗The Maritimes means Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI only; Newfoundland and Labrador is Atlantic but not Maritime.
  • Atlantic Canada ↗Most sights, ferries and seasonal hotels run late June to early September; outside that, check each opening before booking.
  • Nova Scotia ↗Legal drinking age is 19; ID is checked for anyone who looks under 30.
  • Nova Scotia ↗Alcohol in a vehicle must be unopened or stored in the trunk; public drinking can draw a fine.
  • Nova Scotia ↗Ticks are common in spring; tuck trousers into socks and check after hikes.
  • Halifax Region ↗Two tolled harbour bridges link Halifax and Dartmouth: Macdonald and MacKay. MACPASS about $1.00 per trip, cash about $1.25; cash lanes take coins only.
  • Halifax Region ↗Downtown Halifax is walkable and parking is expensive; pick up a rental car only for coast and lake days.

Ship Harbour Long Lake Wilderness Area is the largest protected wilderness in Halifax County: about 16,581 ha of forest, long interconnected lakes and low hills, with no gate, no entry fee and no services. It sits inland from the Eastern Shore, next to White Lake and Tangier Grand Lake wilderness areas. Access is by rough logging roads off Highway 7, and the few routes inside are unmaintained. Come for flatwater paddling, angling and quiet camping; do not come expecting a visitor centre, a marked loop or a ranger on duty.

Time out

Finding the local time zone…

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.

Accessibility

  • There are no maintained, graded or wheelchair-accessible trails; access is over rough ground and water.
  • The road-end clearings are the only vehicle-accessible points; expect uneven surfaces.

Visiting lightly

  • Camp on durable ground and keep groups small; there are no facilities to absorb impact.
  • Pack out all waste, including food scraps, and never leave food for wildlife.
  • Use a stove rather than a fire, and keep to existing tracks where they exist.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to enter Ship Harbour Long Lake Wilderness Area?

Nothing. There is no gate, no entry fee and no booking system — it is a provincial wilderness area, not a national park. You pay only for your own costs: fuel, any canoe rental in Halifax, and a Nova Scotia angling licence if you fish.

What are the best hikes in Ship Harbour Long Lake Wilderness Area?

There are no maintained hiking trails inside the area. The realistic options are walking in from the Musquodoboit Trailways system or following rough routes and old roads from a Moose River Road access point. Expect wet ground, blowdown and no signage; a map and compass are essential.

When is the best time to visit Ship Harbour Long Lake Wilderness Area?

June to September. July and August give the warmest water for paddling and swimming, and September brings fewer blackflies with mild days. May is bug-heavy and April is mud season; December to March the access roads are usually snowed in.

Do I need a permit to camp?

No permit or reservation is required, and there is no fee. Camping is allowed subject to provincial wilderness-area rules — campfires are prohibited, so bring a stove, and pack out all waste.

Can I drive right to the lakes?

Only as far as the rough roads allow. Access is via Moose River Road from Elmsvale off Highway 7, with Off Lake Road and Murchyville Road as other approaches. Road conditions vary; park where the surface becomes unsafe for your vehicle and walk or paddle from there.

Is there drinking water or any facility inside?

No. There are no shops, vendors, toilets or treated water. Bring enough water and purify any surface water you take from the lakes.
