Mount Baker is a 3,286 m volcano in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, reached by the Mount Baker Highway (WA-542) from Bellingham. The road ends at Artist Point, where a paved loop, the Chain Lakes circuit and the Ptarmigan Ridge walk all start from one lot. There is no gate fee for the highway or the lot; some trailheads post a day-use fee. The upper road is open roughly late June to October, so the usable season is short and the wildflowers peak in late July and August. The ski area below Heather Meadows holds the world record for seasonal snowfall, 2,896 cm in 1998–99, which keeps lifts running into April.

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- The Artist Loop is paved and gives a view of Mount Baker without leaving the parking area.
- Picture Lake and the Nooksack Falls viewpoint are short, mostly level walks from a car park.
- Chain Lakes, Ptarmigan Ridge and Table Mountain are rough, steep and not suitable for limited mobility.
Visiting lightly
- Stay on the trail through the flower meadows; trampled alpine plants take years to recover.
- Carry out everything you bring, including food scraps, and use bear-safe storage.
- Park once at Artist Point and walk between the nearby trails instead of moving the car.

How much does it cost to enter Mount Baker?
There is no gate fee to drive the Mount Baker Highway or park at Artist Point. Some trailheads and picnic areas post a day-use fee of about US$5 per vehicle, covered by a Northwest Forest Pass (about US$30 a year) or the America the Beautiful pass (about US$80). Prices are 2026 estimates; check the sign at the site.
What are the best hikes in Mount Baker?
From Artist Point, the paved Artist Loop (30–45 min) is the easy option, the Chain Lakes Loop (about 10 km, 3–4 h) is the classic half-day, and Ptarmigan Ridge gets closest to the glacier. Table Mountain is the hard, exposed scramble. Further west, Hannegan Pass is a 6.4 km one-way climb with 610 m of gain.
When is the best time to visit Mount Baker?
Late July through September. The Artist Point road usually opens in late June and closes with snow in October or November, wildflowers peak in late July and August, and September brings clear, cooler days with fewer people after Labor Day.
Do I need a reservation or permit?
No timed-entry reservation is needed for the highway or Artist Point. Overnight backcountry trips need a free self-issued wilderness permit at the trailhead. Glacier climbs are roped routes for experienced parties or guided groups.
Can I drive to Artist Point in winter?
No. The highway is plowed only as far as the ski area in winter; the upper road to Artist Point is closed by snow, usually from October or November until late June. Chains may be required lower down during storms.
Is there cell service on the Mount Baker Highway?
Do not depend on it past Maple Falls. There are many dead spots, including at services along the highway, so download offline maps and tell someone your plans before you go.
