Casa Grande Ruins National Monument protects the Great House, a four-storey earthen building raised by Hohokam farmers around 1350 CE in the Gila Valley, plus a compound wall, a ball court and platform mounds on about 1.9 km² of Sonoran Desert surrounded by cotton and alfalfa fields. It became the first archaeological reserve in the United States in 1892 and a national monument in 1918; a steel shelter built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1932 still covers the ruin. The site is small and flat — two short loops, a visitor centre and a ranger talk — so treat it as a 1.5–2 hour stop on an I-10 day between Phoenix and Tucson, not a destination in itself.

- The Great House is a four-storey earthen building from about 1350 CE, the largest surviving Hohokam structure and the reason the monument exists.
- It is the first archaeological reserve in the United States (1892) and a national monument since 1918, so the site has a longer protection history than almost anywhere in the Southwest.
- The 1932 steel shelter over the ruin is itself a piece of Civilian Conservation Corps engineering, still doing the job it was built for.
- It sits 30–40 minutes off I-10 between Phoenix and Tucson, so it slots into a drive day without a separate trip.

November to March. Daytime highs sit around 17–24 °C and the light on the earthen walls is good all afternoon. June to August is 40 °C+ and best avoided; if you come then, be at the gate for the 09:00 opening and leave within an hour.
