Chalcatzingo is an Olmec site in eastern Morelos, settled around 1500 BC and at its height around 700 BC, and it is one of the oldest places you can visit in central Mexico. What you come for is the carving, not the architecture: Monument 1 (El Rey) and the Group 2 panels are shallow reliefs cut into the rock at the foot of Cerro Chalcatzingo, and they read best in low morning light. The zone itself is small — a monument loop, a later pyramid and ball court built after 500 BC under Teotihuacán influence, and a small INAH museum — so two hours covers it. The real walking is on the two basalt hills that rise out of the flat farmland: Cerro Chalcatzingo above the ruins and Cabeza de Chango by the highway, about 2 km apart, both short, steep and unmanaged. It pairs naturally with Cuernavaca, Cuautla or Xochicalco rather than filling a day on its own.

Expect roughly MXN 75–95 per person for the INAH archaeological zone in 2026, with a reduced rate for Mexican nationals and residents on Sundays. The two balnearios next door charge separately (about MXN 50 entry, MXN 100 to camp). Bring cash — there is no ATM at the site.
What are the best hikes in Chalcatzingo?
Two short climbs: Cerro Chalcatzingo, straight up from the ruins, and Cabeza de Chango, the hill by the highway about 2 km away. Both take 1–2 hours up and down, are steep with loose gravel, and give the best view of the valley and the site. There is no long trek here.
When is the best time to visit Chalcatzingo?
November to March: dry, clear and cool enough to climb a hill at midday. October and April are also good. June to September brings afternoon rain, slick paths and the wettest month in September. Whatever the month, arrive at opening for the best light on the carvings.
How long do you need at Chalcatzingo?
Two hours covers the monuments, the pyramid and the small museum. Add an hour or two for one of the hills, and a half day if you also use a balneario pool. It works as a stop between Cuernavaca and Cuautla rather than a full day out.
Can you visit Chalcatzingo without a car?
Yes, but it takes two buses. From Cuernavaca take an Estrella Roja bus to Cuautla, then a Volcanes second-class bus toward Amayuca and ask to be dropped at Chalcatzingo. Allow 2–3 hours each way and check the last return bus before you set off.
Is Chalcatzingo worth visiting?
If you care about early Mesoamerica, yes: the relief carvings are among the oldest large sculptures in Mexico and you will often have them to yourself. If you are expecting pyramids on the scale of Teotihuacán or Chichén Itzá, skip it and go to Xochicalco instead.
