Go for the red crab migration in Nov–Dec and book flights and rooms 6–12 months out; outside those weeks the island is quiet, so come for the walks, the blowholes and the diving, and rent a 4WD before you land.

Rules in force · 7
  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Christmas Island is an Australian territory 1,550 km northwest of the mainland and about 350 km south of Java, closer to Indonesia than to Perth. Almost two-thirds of the island is national park, managed by the federal parks agency: rainforest on a central plateau, an 80 km cliff coastline, freshwater streams at The Dales, and the annual red crab migration that closes roads and fills the beaches with crabs. Flights are limited — a few services a week from Perth, plus connections via the Cocos (Keeling) Islands and seasonal Jakarta flights — so the island rewards people who plan around a fixed arrival date rather than a route.

Why go

  • The red crab migration: millions of crabs cross the island to the sea, usually from late October into December, and roads close for them.
  • The Dales: freshwater streams and terraced gullies with raised boardwalks through rainforest.
  • The Blowholes on the south coast, where swell forces air and spray out of holes in the limestone.
  • Diving and snorkelling at Flying Fish Cove and the drop-offs, with whale sharks in season.

National park entry no permit

No ticket gate; walk in at signed trailheads (check).

Dolly Beach and other 4WD tracks no permit

No permit, but a high-clearance 4WD is needed and the track is rough; ask locally before setting out.

Caving permit or guide

Take local advice and go with someone who knows the caves; unguided trips are not advised.

Turtle watching at Dolly Beach no permit

No permit; keep lights off the turtles and stay quiet.

Park rules

Drones, guides, camping and more
Crabs on the road
Slow down and stop for crab crossings; barriers and closures are there for the migration, and driving over crabs is not acceptable.
Turtles
No torch light in a turtle's eyes and no loud noise on nesting beaches; disturbing turtles or poaching eggs is illegal.
Cliff edges and rock platforms
Stay back from unmarked edges and off the outcrops at Lily Beach; freak waves sweep the rocks, especially in the monsoon months.
Caves
Get local advice before entering any cave; go with someone who knows the system.
Remote areas
Tell someone where you are going before heading into unpopulated parts of the park; phone coverage is patchy.

Where to stay

In the park

Swell Lodge

The only lodging inside the national park, at Martin Point; closed for part of the year, so check dates.

Near the park

Settlement and Poon Saan guesthouses

The main cluster of lodges, cottages and apartments, a short drive from the cove and the trailheads.

Safety

Freak waves on cliffs and rock platforms high

Keep off the outcrops and unmarked cliff edges; the biggest risk is in the monsoon months, roughly October–February.

4WD tracks in the wet season medium

Use a high-clearance 4WD and drive slowly; tracks such as Dolly Beach and the Dales area are steep and slippery after rain.

Getting lost or stranded in remote park areas medium

Take water, tell someone your plan, and carry a phone; coverage does not reach everywhere.

Sharks at the drop-offs low

Reef and hammerhead sharks are occasionally seen offshore; no attacks have been reported, but dive with a buddy and follow the operator's briefing.

Accessibility

  • The Settlement, the visitor centre and Margaret Knoll lookout are reachable by car with short, level walks.
  • The Dales boardwalk has steps and can be slippery; Dolly Beach and the Blowholes tracks are rough and not suitable for limited mobility.

Visiting lightly

  • Do not drive over crabs, move barriers or handle wildlife during the migration.
  • Keep lights and noise away from nesting turtles at Dolly Beach.
  • Carry out your rubbish and use the island's recycling points; landfill space on a small island is limited.
  • Buy from island shops and eat locally so money stays in the community.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to enter Christmas Island?

There is no national park entry fee (check), and no ticket gate at the trailheads. Your costs are the flight, car hire, lodging and any guided tours or dives. Budget roughly A$70–130 a day for a small 4WD and A$200–400 a night for the park lodge in 2026 estimates.

What are the best hikes in Christmas Island?

The Dales boardwalk is the easiest real rainforest walk, with raised walkways along the streams. The Blowholes track and Margaret Knoll are short. Dolly Beach is the hardest day walk: a rough 4WD track and a steep 45-minute descent to the beach.

When is the best time to visit Christmas Island?

July to October for dry weather, cooler nights and good walking and diving. November to December if you want the red crab migration, accepting heat, humidity and daily rain. January to April is the wettest stretch and the park lodge is usually closed.

Do I need a passport to visit Christmas Island?

It is an Australian territory, so Australian entry requirements apply. Travelling from the mainland you need photo ID rather than a passport, but bring your passport if you are connecting through or arriving from Indonesia.

How do I get to Christmas Island?

By air only. There are a few flights a week from Perth, a weekly link from the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, and seasonal flights from Jakarta. There is no regular passenger boat service; cruise ships and yachts call at Flying Fish Cove.

Can I see the red crab migration without a tour?

Yes. The crabs cross roads and reach the coast on their own, and some roads close for them. Drive slowly, follow the signs and barriers, and never drive over crabs. A guide helps you find the main crossing points at the right time.
