Illiniza is a twin-peaked extinct stratovolcano about 55 km south of Quito, split between Pichincha and Cotopaxi provinces. The northern summit (Iliniza Norte, about 5,126 m) is ice-free rock; the southern one (Iliniza Sur, about 5,248 m) still carries a shrinking glacier and is a serious alpine climb. Both sit inside the Reserva Ecológica Los Illinizas, a roughly 1,500 km² protected area established in 1996 that also holds the Quilotoa lagoon and the Corazón volcano. There is almost no visitor infrastructure: one unserviced hut, one rough access road, and a fee collected at the trailhead.

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- No paved paths, railings or visitor centre; the reserve is not suitable for limited mobility.
- The road to La Virgen is a rough 4x4 track, so even reaching the trailhead is difficult without a suitable vehicle.
Visiting lightly
- Hire local licensed guides from Machachi, Latacunga or Quito so climbing income stays in the area.
- Pack out all waste, including food scraps and toilet paper; there is no collection on the mountain.
- Do not light fires; the paramo and the hut have no firewood and recover slowly.
- Treat the glacier on Iliniza Sur as a shrinking resource: avoid unnecessary travel on it and follow your guide's route.

What are the best hikes in Illiniza?
The most popular walk is La Virgen to the Nuevos Horizontes hut, about three hours uphill, with an optional side trip to Laguna Verde. The classic summit is Iliniza Norte, a rocky scramble that needs a licensed guide. Iliniza Sur is a glacier climb for experienced mountaineers only.
When is the best time to visit Illiniza?
The dry season from about July to December, with September often the most stable stretch (the local veranillo). January to June is wet, with fog and precipitation from midday, which makes navigation dangerous. Freezing temperatures and strong wind are possible at the summits at any time of year.
Do I need a guide to climb Illiniza?
Yes for the summits. Ecuador requires a licensed mountain guide for all climbs above 5,000 m, which covers both Iliniza Norte and Iliniza Sur. The walk from La Virgen to the hut and Laguna Verde does not require a guide.
How do I get to Illiniza from Quito?
Take a bus or drive south on the Panamericana to Machachi, about an hour, then continue west through Chaupi on a rough 4x4 track to La Virgen at about 4,200 m. Allow 2.5–3.5 hours in total from Quito.
