Deventer is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, on the river IJssel, and a former Hanseatic League member. Its compact medieval centre holds the country's oldest brick house, its oldest park and its oldest academic library. Most travellers see it in a day, or use it as a one-night stop between Amsterdam and Berlin.

Getting around

The historic centre is small and best on foot; the Brink is the natural start. A passenger ferry crosses the IJssel to De Worp and the Ossenwaard nature area (single about €1.10, return about €1.70, check). Bicycles can be rented from local bike shops. Deventer has two stations: Deventer (main) and Deventer Colmschate (east, local trains only).

Safety

Deventer is a low-risk Dutch city; the real issues are pickpockets around the Brink on event weekends, bicycles on shared paths, and icy pavements in winter. Emergency number is 112.
  • The Dickens Festival (last weekend before Christmas) draws about 120,000 (≈ US$140,000) visitors; book beds and expect queues.
  • The book market (first Sunday of August) closes streets around the riverfront and main squares.
  • The passenger ferry runs until late (about 23:00) but check seasonal times; the bridges are the fallback.
  • Some museums close on Mondays — check before you plan a Monday visit.
