Naracoorte Caves is the only UNESCO World Heritage site in South Australia, listed in 1994 as part of the Australian Fossil Mammal Sites with Riversleigh in Queensland. The value is underground: open cave mouths acted as pitfall traps for half a million years, and the silt floors hold one of the world's richest records of Australian megafauna. Of 28 known caves, four are open to visitors and the rest are research-only. Above ground it is flat farmland and scrub, so the park rewards a booked tour rather than a walk.

There is no gate fee for the park itself. You pay per cave: the Wonambi Fossil Centre is about A$15 adult, the self-guided Stick-Tomato Cave about A$11 adult, and guided cave tours roughly A$25–30 adult. Adventure caving runs A$68–130. Prices are 2026 estimates — confirm when you book.
What are the best hikes in Naracoorte Caves National Park?
There are no long hikes. The Roof Top Loop Walk over the cave system takes 30–45 minutes on flat, exposed ground. The real walking is underground: the Victoria Fossil Cave tour is about an hour, Stick-Tomato Cave is a 20–30 minute self-guided walk with about 20 steps, and the Alexandra Cave tour is about 30 minutes.
When is the best time to visit Naracoorte Caves National Park?
April, May, September and October give mild, mostly dry weather. Avoid January and February if you dislike heat above ground, and June and July if you want to dodge rain and cold nights. Caves stay near 17°C all year, so the weather mainly affects the surface walk and the drive.
Do I need to book cave tours in advance?
Yes for guided tours. Victoria Fossil Cave runs at set times (about 10:15 and 14:15) and Alexandra at about 9:30 and 13:30, and they fill during South Australian school holidays. Stick-Tomato Cave is self-guided and needs no booking.
Can I visit without going underground?
You can, but there is little reason to. Above ground is flat farmland and scrub with the short Roof Top Loop Walk, the visitor centre display and the cafe. The World Heritage value is in the fossil caves, so book at least one tour.
How do I get to Naracoorte Caves without a car?
It is hard. Stateliner coaches stop in Naracoorte town on the Adelaide–Mount Gambier route, but nothing runs from the town to the park gate. Taxis from Naracoorte or Mount Gambier can be booked for the trip; otherwise rent a car in Mount Gambier, Keith or Adelaide.
