- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Deception Pass State Park straddles the narrow waterway between Whidbey and Fidalgo Islands, where the tide rips between Skagit Bay and the Strait of Juan de Fuca hard enough to stop boats and throw standing waves under the 1935 bridge. The park itself is gentle: nearly 40 miles of short, low-gain trails, two beaches, tidepools at Rosario Head and a rocky summit at Goose Rock, all within 90 minutes of Seattle. It is a day-use park with a Discover Pass, not a national park, so there is no timed entry and no shuttle — the only real constraint is summer parking at the bridge and Cranberry Lake.

Time out
Finding the local time zone…
Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- The Sand Dunes Interpretive Trail is a paved 0.8 mi loop with an observation deck.
- West Beach, North Beach and the Cranberry Lake day-use area have short, mostly level walks from parking.
- The bridge sidewalks are narrow and have low railings; wheelchair users should check conditions before crossing.
- Bowman Bay and Cornet Bay have accessible parking and boat-launch viewing areas.
Visiting lightly
- Stay on marked trails; the forest floor and dune vegetation recover slowly from trampling.
- Pack out everything, including crab shells and fishing line.
- Do not move or handle tidepool animals, and keep dogs out of the pools.
- Use the park's recycling and food-waste bins at Cranberry Lake rather than leaving scraps for wildlife.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to enter Deception Pass State Park?
Day use needs a Discover Pass, about US$11 for one vehicle for the day (2026 estimate), or you can pay the day-use fee of about US$14 at the entrance station. The annual Discover Pass is about US$35. Camping, boat launches and guided tours cost extra.
What are the best hikes in Deception Pass State Park?
For a short visit, the Goose Rock summit (steep, 0.3–0.5 mi up) plus the North Beach Trail gives you the bridge view and the beach in 2–3 hours. With more time add the Lottie Point or Lighthouse Point loops on the Fidalgo side, or the 2.2 mi Pass Lake Loop through deep forest.
When is the best time to visit Deception Pass State Park?
May, June, September and early October: dry trails, long daylight and thinner weekday crowds. July and August are warm and dry but the bridge and beach lots fill before 10:00. Winter is wet and quiet, with the best wildlife watching from the bluffs.
Do I need a reservation to visit?
No reservation for day use; just display a Discover Pass. Camping at Cranberry Lake and Cornet Bay should be reserved in advance, especially from May to September.
Can I walk across the Deception Pass Bridge?
Yes. There is a narrow sidewalk on each side, separated from the roadway by a low railing. It is a short walk with big views of the tidal currents, but it is not suitable for anyone uneasy with heights or traffic noise.
Is Deception Pass good for swimming or kayaking?
Swimming in the pass is dangerous and should not be attempted. Kayaking is fine in protected Bowman Bay with a guide or on your own if you are experienced; only expert paddlers run the pass itself, and only at slack tide.
How do I get there without a car?
Island Transit route 411W stops at the park entrance and connects Oak Harbor with March's Point, linking to Skagit Transit for Mount Vernon. Once inside the park there is no public transport, so you still need a bike or a long walk between the two sides.
