Franconian Switzerland is not a fenced park but a rural upland between the Pegnitz, Regnitz and Main rivers in northern Bavaria, named in the 19th century by Romantic writers who thought the limestone hills looked Swiss. It holds more than a thousand caves, a dense spread of castle ruins and the highest concentration of breweries of any region in the world. Access is free and open; you pay only for cave tours, parking and the heritage steam railway. Public transport is thin, so most visitors drive, and summer weekends clog the narrow valley roads.

How much does it cost to enter Franconian Switzerland?
Nothing. There is no gate and no region-wide entrance fee. You pay per site: show caves cost about €4.50–5 for adults and €2.50–3 for children (2026 estimate), plus parking in some villages and the steam train fare if you ride it.
What are the best hikes in Franconian Switzerland?
The Wiesent valley paths between Muggendorf, Behringersmühle and Pottenstein are the easiest full-day walking, with village stops. For a climb, take a marked path up to a castle ruin above the valley; the side slopes are steep and can be slippery when wet.
When is the best time to visit Franconian Switzerland?
May, June, September and October: dry paths, long days and the steam railway running. July and August are warm but the valley roads and show caves are busiest at weekends. Many caves close or open only by request from November to March.
Do I need a car?
It helps. Trains reach Ebermannstadt from Forchheim year round and the steam line continues to Behringersmühle on running days, but most villages and caves are poorly served by bus. Cycling works if you can handle the steep slopes.
