Doubtful Sound / Patea is the second fiord of Fiordland National Park and the one you cannot drive to. Access is a chain: minibus to Pearl Harbour, boat across Lake Manapouri past the underground power station, then minibus over Wilmot Pass to Deep Cove. That chain keeps the crowds down and the price up. Rain falls most days, and a layer of fresh water sits on top of the salt, so the fiord looks and behaves differently from Milford Sound. Sandflies are constant. Book the crossing as one package; there is nothing to buy at the far end.

Accessibility
- The boat, bus and cruise are step-on, step-off with crew help; the Wilmot Pass bus has limited space for wheelchairs, so ask when booking.
- The four Deep Cove walks are forest tracks with roots and mud; none is suitable for wheelchairs.
Visiting lightly
- Book with operators that follow DOC wildlife distances; do not chase dolphins or seals.
- Take all rubbish back to Manapouri; there are no bins at Deep Cove.
- Check boots and gear for seeds and soil before and after the trip; Fiordland has strict biosecurity.

How much does it cost to enter Doubtful Sound?
Entry is free: there is no fee for Fiordland National Park or the fiord. What you pay for is the crossing and the boat. A day trip from Manapouri with the Lake Manapouri boat, the Wilmot Pass bus and the fiord cruise runs about NZ$250–350 per person in 2026; an overnight cruise about NZ$600–900; a multi-day kayak trip from about NZ$400. Camping at Hall Arm is free.
What are the best hikes in Doubtful Sound?
There are four short DOC walks from Deep Cove: Helena Falls (2 h return, 1.9 km), Old Doubtful Sound Track (3 h through podocarp forest), Hanging Valley Track (3 h, steep, to Huntleigh Falls) and Brasell Point Nature Walk (1 h, easy). Longer routes need a boat and a plan; most people walk one or two of these while waiting for the cruise.
When is the best time to visit Doubtful Sound?
November to March: mild temperatures, long daylight and the most sailings. February is usually the driest and the busiest. October and April are quieter with good waterfall flow. June to August is winter, with fewer departures and snow possible on Wilmot Pass.
Can I drive to Doubtful Sound?
No. There is no road to the fiord. You go by minibus to Pearl Harbour on Lake Manapouri, by boat across the lake, then by minibus over Wilmot Pass to Deep Cove. Operators sell this as one package.
Do I need to book in advance?
Yes for the crossing, cruises and kayak trips, especially December to March. There is no walk-up access and no shop at the far end, so arrive with everything you need.
Is Doubtful Sound better than Milford Sound?
Different trip. Milford Sound is a 2-hour drive from Te Anau with many cruises and crowds; Doubtful Sound takes a boat and a bus to reach, so it is quieter and costs more. If you have one day and a car, Milford; if you want the remote version, Doubtful.
