Vilnius is a walking city: give the mornings to the Old Town, the afternoons to Užupis and the cafés, and keep a half day for Trakai by train or bus.

- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Baltic states ↗Treat the Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian borders with Russia and Belarus as closed to your plans: crossings are restricted, change within hours, and sit under advisories on the far side.
- Baltic states ↗Book open-jaw flights (into Tallinn or Vilnius, out of the other) so the line runs one way; Riga is the biggest airport if you need a single hub.
- Baltic states ↗Midsummer (23–24 June) is the biggest holiday in all three countries: cities empty, many businesses close and island and coast transport sells out.
- Lithuania ↗Lithuania is in the EU and the Schengen area; the EU Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors. Check the official EU and Lithuanian sources for your passport.
- Lithuania ↗Borders with Belarus and the Russian Kaliningrad region are not routes for casual travel; check your government's advice first.
- Lithuania ↗The Curonian Spit is a protected national park: cars pay an entry fee, and the Russian half of the spit is a separate border.
- Vilnius and the east ↗Dec–Feb is cold and dark in Vilnius and Trakai: plan outdoor sights for 10:00 to 15:00.

Who it suits, the trade-offs and when to go
Overview
The city in one paragraph, who it fits, and how many days it takes.
Vilnius has one of the largest surviving medieval old towns in Northern Europe, and it is small enough to cover on foot from one bed. The airport is about 6 km from the centre and cheap to reach. What goes wrong is cobbles and ice under wheeled bags, short winter days (about seven hours of daylight in December) and loud summer weekend nights around the bars. Four walking areas cover a first visit.
Fits
- Short city breaks on foot
- Architecture and church visits
- Cafés and food halls in a compact centre
Does not fit
- Wheelchairs and strollers on the cobbles
- Beach trips (the sea is a train ride away)
- Travellers who dislike cold, dark winters
- 2 days
- Old Town and Cathedral quarter, Užupis in the evening
- 3 days
- Four areas on foot, one slow afternoon
- 5 days
- Four areas + Trakai half day + one slow day
- Don't confuse
- Vilnius Old Town is the historic core inside the old walls; Užupis is a separate neighbourhood across the Vilnelė river with its own informal 'republic'.
Hover, tap or tab to an area to see what it is like. Pins are sleep areas; arrows at the edge point to the airport.
Off the map: Vilnius Airport (VNO) (15–30 min by the usual route).
Where’s what, as a list:
- Old Town: Town Hall Square, Gates of Dawn & Halės: The core: Town Hall Square, the Halės market hall and the Gates of Dawn on one street line; walk it morning or evening on the cobbles.
- Cathedral & Gediminas Hill: Morning cluster: the cathedral square at opening, the climb to Gediminas Tower before the groups, coffee on Pilies street.
- Užupis & Bernardine Garden: Afternoon cluster: the small artists' quarter across the Vilnelė river, then the Bernardine Garden; quiet, uneven lanes with little shade.
- Gedimino Avenue & Lukiškės Square: The modern centre: shops, cafés and the Lukiškės Square; use it for a rain-day afternoon or an evening meal.
- Sleep area Gedimino Avenue: suits Families, older travellers, price band $$$.
- Sleep area Old Town: suits Families, solo on a budget, price band $$.
- Vilnius Airport (VNO), 15–30 min by the usual route.
Decide
The honest trade-off: what you will enjoy, what will wear you down.
You will like
- Compact walkable centre
- Baroque churches and courtyards
- Low prices compared with western Europe
You will hate
- Cobbles and ice
- Dark winters
- Weekend noise in the Old Town

Arrive & move
Getting in, getting around, and your bags
Arrive
Each gateway has its own airport-to-bed page with timings and the last safe connection.
Move
The default way around, when a pass pays off, and when the last trains go.
- Default
- Walk inside an area; buses or a ride-hailing car between areas; Bolt is widely used.
- Passes
- No pass needed for a short stay: a few single rides or a day ticket cover the airport and the outer sights.
- Last trains
- Buses and trolleybuses stop late at night; ride-hailing runs all night.
- Other modes

Luggage
Where big bags are a problem, and how to get rid of them for the day.
Rule
- Lockers
- Some hotels and the central station keep bags; there are few public lockers.
- Forwarding
- No forwarding culture; the airport is a short ride, so keep the bag with you.
- Dead zone
- Late flights: ask the hotel to hold bags after check-out.
