Go for a half day if you are already between Jyväskylä and Lahti: walk the 4.5 km (2.8 mi) Harjun kierros to Joutsniemi ridge, or the accessible 3.5 km (2.2 mi) Luupään Lenkki at Harjujärvi. Skip the detour if you have only one Finland week — Salamajärvi and the Lakeland give more for the same drive.

  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Nordic countries ↗Decide light or dark before anything else: summer trips (June–August) and aurora trips (September–March in the Arctic) need different countries, clothes and bases.
  • Nordic countries ↗Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland and the Faroes sell stronger alcohol only in state shops with short hours; buy before evening and before Sundays and holidays.
  • Finland ↗Finland is in the EU and the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border.
  • Finland ↗The land border with Russia is closed to travellers; do not plan a route across it.
  • Finland ↗Everyman's rights let you walk, camp for a night and pick berries on most land, but not near homes, and not to make fires without permission.

Leivonmäki National Park is a compact, low-effort park in Joutsa, Central Finland, about 50 km south of Jyväskylä and just west of national road 4 (E75). The barren lake Rutajärvi splits it in two: dry pine eskers, old spruce and small mire hollows in the north, and the open Haapasuo mire in the south, best seen from the Haapasuo esker and its bird tower. Trails are short and easy — the 4.5 km Harjun kierros to the Joutsniemi ridge, the accessible 3.5 km Luupään Lenkki at Harjujärvi, the 0.5 km Koskikara rapids trail from Rutalahti — so it fits a half day between Jyväskylä and Lahti rather than a dedicated trip. Entry is free, as in all Finnish national parks; the only real constraints are the Haapasuo nesting closure from 15 April to 15 July and wildfire warnings that ban open fires.

Why go

  • Eskers with open pine forest, small lakes and mire hollows in one compact park.
  • The Haapasuo mire is the south's main sight, with a bird tower at the edge of the nesting closure.
  • Joutsniemi ridge juts into Rutajärvi on the Harjun kierros loop — the best short walk here.
  • Trails are easy and short, so it works with small children, prams and a half-day stop.

Time out

Finding the local time zone…

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.

Accessibility

  • Luupään Lenkki (3.5 km (2.2 mi)) at Harjujärvi suits prams and wheelchairs.
  • The Harjujärvi camping area can be reached by car; the boom is opened with a key arranged in advance (check).
  • The Haapasuo bird tower and the esker paths involve steps and uneven ground.

Visiting lightly

  • Use the marked campfire sites and keep fires small; wood is provided, deadwood is not.
  • Carry out all rubbish — the park has few bins.
  • Keep to trails on the mire edges during the nesting closure so birds are not flushed.
  • Pick berries and mushrooms only for your own use.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to enter Leivonmäki National Park?

Nothing. Like other Finnish national parks, Leivonmäki has no entrance fee and parking at Kirveslampi and Selänpohja is free. You pay only for optional extras such as a guided tour or equipment rental, roughly €40–120 per person in 2026.

What are the best hikes in Leivonmäki National Park?

The 4.5 km Harjun kierros loop from Selänpohja to Joutsniemi ridge is the best short walk. For an accessible option, the 3.5 km Luupään Lenkki at Harjujärvi suits prams and wheelchairs. The 11 km Rutalahti trail and the 22 km bike loop are the longer options.

When is the best time to visit Leivonmäki National Park?

June to September for dry trails, long daylight and berries. Note that most of the Haapasuo mire is closed 15 April–15 July for bird nesting — the tower at the edge stays open. Winter is quiet, with a 10 km ski track in the south when snow allows.

Can I get there without a car?

It is possible but slow. Buses on national road 4 stop at Leivonmäki, and from the village it is 3.5 km on foot to the Haapasuo edge and 5.5 km to the Kirveslampi trailhead. A taxi operates in Leivonmäki; a car is far easier.

Can I camp in the park?

Yes. Tent sites at Lintuniemi and Harjujärvi take 5–7 tents each, camping is also allowed near campfire sites, and there are free lean-to shelters at Joutsniemi, Soimalampi and Niinisaari. Fires only at marked sites and never during a wildfire warning.

Is Leivonmäki worth a detour from Jyväskylä?

For a half day, yes, if you are driving between Jyväskylä and Lahti on road 4. If you want a bigger wilderness day, Salamajärvi National Park to the northwest gives more trail for the same effort.
