  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • New Zealand ↗Visa-waiver visitors need an NZeTA (with the tourism levy) before travel, including many transit passengers; others need a visa. Apply only through Immigration New Zealand or its official app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • New Zealand ↗Declare all food, plant and animal products, and used outdoor gear such as hiking boots and tents, on the New Zealand Traveller Declaration; undeclared risk items bring instant fines.
  • New Zealand ↗Drive on the left; give way as signed at one-lane bridges; an English-language licence or one with an approved translation or International Driving Permit is required.

Paparoa National Park is a narrow strip of limestone country on the West Coast of the South Island, between Westport and Greymouth, crossed by State Highway 6. It was established in 1987 and runs from the Tasman Sea shore up over the Paparoa Range. There is no gate and no entry fee: the Pancake Rocks and blowholes sit beside the highway, the Pororari and Fox river valleys give free forest and river walking, and the Paparoa Track crosses the range as a Great Walk with DOC hut bookings. Most visitors see only the Pancake Rocks in a 30-minute stop; the park rewards a half or full day, and the weather is wet in every month.

Safety

River crossings and rising water high

Do not cross the Fox or Pororari rivers when they are high or brown; rain upstream reaches the gorge fast.

Slippery limestone and steps medium

Wear shoes with grip; the Pancake Rocks path is slick when wet.

Weather changes medium

The West Coast gets very heavy rain. Carry a rain jacket and check the forecast and DOC alerts before setting out.

Remote backcountry medium

On the Paparoa Track, carry a personal locator beacon; phone coverage is patchy.

How much daylight do you have?

computed for this spot

Time out

Finding the local time zone…

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.

Accessibility

  • The Pancake Rocks loop is largely accessible, with a few stepped sections.
  • The visitor centre and car park are level and close to the road.
  • The Pororari and Fox river tracks are rough and not suitable for wheelchairs.

Visiting lightly

  • Pay the DOC hut fees; the money goes back into track and hut maintenance.
  • Use a red-light torch in glow-worm caves and keep noise down.
  • Check your boots and gear for seeds and soil before and after walking, to slow the spread of weeds.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to enter Paparoa National Park?

Nothing. There is no entry fee and no gate. You pay only for extras — a guided cave trip (roughly NZ$120–200 per person, 2026 estimate), a DOC backcountry hut night (roughly NZ$15–25), or parking, which is free at the Pancake Rocks.

What are the best hikes in Paparoa National Park?

For most visitors: the 30-minute Pancake Rocks loop, the Truman Track (20–30 min), and the Pororari River Track (2–3 h). For a full day, the Fox River caves. For a serious trip, the 2–3 day Paparoa Track, which needs DOC hut bookings.

When is the best time to visit Paparoa National Park?

January to March for the warmest, driest weather, or October and November for good walking with fewer people. The West Coast rains all year, so pack for wet days whenever you go.

Do I need a permit or booking?

No permit for day walks. You do need to book and pay for DOC huts on the Paparoa Track, and to book guided cave trips with a local operator.

How long do I need at the Pancake Rocks?

About 30 minutes for the loop, plus time in the car park. Tour buses arrive between 10:00 and 15:00, so early morning or late afternoon is calmer.

Is Paparoa National Park near the glaciers?

It is on the same coast but a few hours' drive south of Franz Josef and Fox Glacier. Most people stop at Punakaiki between Greymouth and Westport.
