Mammoth Cave National Park protects the longest known cave system on Earth — more than 426 miles (686 km) mapped so far — under a rolling plateau of Kentucky forest in the Caves and Lakes region. The cave itself is only reachable on a ranger-guided tour, and tours sell out on summer weekends, so the tour booking decides your day. Above ground the park is a normal, quiet woodland park: about 70 miles (113 km) of backcountry trails, two rivers, and a free road entrance. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an International Biosphere Reserve, roughly halfway between Louisville and Nashville on Interstate 65.

- Every route into the cave is a ticketed ranger-led tour; entering passages on your own is not allowed.
- Footwear and clothing
- Closed shoes required on all tours; some routes are wet, muddy and steep.
- Food and drink in the cave
- Only water is allowed on most tours; no food, and no smoking or vaping underground.
- Bats and gear
- Do not bring caving gear used in other caves without checking; white-nose syndrome controls apply (check).

How much does it cost to enter Mammoth Cave National Park?
Nothing. There is no entrance fee for the park road, trails or visitor centre. You pay only for cave tours, roughly $20–30 per adult for a short route and up to about $75 for the Wild Cave tour (2026 estimate).
What are the best hikes in Mammoth Cave National Park?
Above ground, the Green River Bluffs and Dixon Cave loop from the visitor centre is the best short walk, with river overlooks and a big cave entrance. The River Styx Spring trail is an easier option, and the First Creek and Big Hollow loop gives a quieter half day. Underground, the Historic tour is the standard walk.
When is the best time to visit Mammoth Cave National Park?
April, May, September and October: mild weather, full tour schedules and fewer crowds than midsummer. June to August is hot, humid and the busiest for tours, so book ahead. Winter is quiet, with a reduced tour list.
Do I need to book cave tours in advance?
Yes in practice. Tours are guided and ticketed, and summer weekends sell out. Book online before you travel; a small number of same-day tickets are sold at the visitor centre.
How long do you need at Mammoth Cave?
One full day covers a cave tour plus a surface walk. Two days lets you add a longer tour or a backcountry hike; the visitor centre and cave are about 10 minutes from the park entrance.
Is Mammoth Cave worth visiting if I do not want to go underground?
