- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Shawnee National Forest covers about 1,100 km² of southern Illinois between the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, a landscape of sandstone bluffs, canyons and wooded ridges left by the southern edge of the Illinoisan ice sheet. It was established in 1933 on worn-out farmland, much of it replanted by Civilian Conservation Corps crews. There is no entrance gate and no entrance fee: you pay for camping, permits where posted, and your own fuel. The forest is a patchwork, with private land and state sites such as Giant City and Ferne Clyffe inside or beside it, so check whose rules apply where you park.

Time out
Finding the local time zone…
Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- Garden of the Gods observation trail is gravel and mostly level, with some uneven rock.
- Pounds Hollow and several campground loops have paved or hard-packed paths and accessible restrooms (check).
- Little Grand Canyon, the River to River Trail and most bluff routes are steep and not suitable for limited mobility.
Visiting lightly
- Stay on marked trails; shortcutting erodes sandstone edges that do not recover.
- Pack out all rubbish, including food scraps, and use catholes well away from water.
- Do not feed or approach wildlife, and keep dogs leashed where posted.
- Buy fuel, food and wine locally in Carbondale, Anna or the hill towns so the forest economy stays with the region.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to enter Shawnee National Forest?
Nothing. There is no gate and no entrance fee on national forest land. You pay only for camping (about US$10–36 a night at developed sites), any permits for events or group use, and your own fuel. Primitive backcountry camping is free.
What are the best hikes in Shawnee National Forest?
For a short visit, the Garden of the Gods observation trail (30–45 minutes, easy) and the Indian Point bluff walk at Pounds Hollow. For a half day, Little Grand Canyon (3–4 hours, hard, skip after rain). For backpackers, a section of the River to River Trail.
When is the best time to visit Shawnee National Forest?
April, May and October. Spring brings dogwood, redbud and running water; October brings fall colour and long views. July and August are hot and humid, and winter brings ice on bluff steps. Fall weekends in October are the busiest.
Do I need a pass or permit?
No pass for the forest itself. An America the Beautiful pass (about US$80, 2026 estimate) is only useful if you also visit fee-charging federal sites elsewhere. Large groups, events and commercial filming need a forest permit.
Do I need a car?
Yes. There is no public transport to the trailheads. Amtrak stops at Carbondale, but you still need a rental car for the 45–60 minute drive to the eastern bluffs.
Is Shawnee the same as Giant City State Park?
No. Giant City and Ferne Clyffe are Illinois state sites inside or beside the national forest, with their own rules and campgrounds. The national forest surrounds them but is managed separately.
