Göreme is a small town in central Cappadocia and the usual base for the region. The landscape is volcanic tuff shaped into cones and valleys, with rock-cut churches, cave hotels and underground cities nearby. Balloon flights, valley walks and the open-air museum are the main things to do. Three nights lets you fit two valley days and a balloon morning with a spare for wind.

Cappadocia is generally safe for visitors; the real risks are unlicensed balloon operators, scooter accidents on unlit roads and sun exposure on the trails.
  • Balloon flights are cancelled in high wind; keep a spare morning and book a flexible date.
  • Winter nights are cold and some hotels and restaurants close from December to February.
  • Book cave hotels early for spring and autumn.
  • Balloon prices vary widely and safety standards differ: check the operator's licence and reviews, not just the price.
  • Valley trails have little shade in summer and can be slippery after rain; carry water.
