Triglav National Park covers almost the whole Slovene side of the Julian Alps, with Mount Triglav (2,864 m) at its centre. There is no gate and no ticket: you pay for parking, for a few gorges and waterfalls, and for toll mountain roads. Lake Bohinj and the Soča valley are the two bases most visitors use. The park takes over two million visits a year, so the crowds are real in July and August and thin out sharply in June and September.

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- The lakeside path at Bohinj and the Ribčev Laz area are flat and partly paved.
- The Vogel cable car gives high-mountain views without a climb; the top station has a viewing terrace.
- The Savica steps, Vintgar boardwalk and all Triglav routes are not suitable for limited mobility.
Visiting lightly
- Take the bus or the Bohinj local summer buses to trailheads instead of driving between car parks.
- Stay on marked trails; the high meadows and dwarf pine take years to recover from shortcuts.
- Carry out all rubbish, including food waste, and refill bottles from taps rather than buying plastic.

How much does it cost to enter Triglav National Park?
Nothing. There is no entrance fee and no gate. You pay for parking (about €2–10 a day, 2026 estimate), for a few sites such as Savica Waterfall and Vintgar Gorge, and for the Vršič and Mangart toll roads.
What are the best hikes in Triglav National Park?
For an easy day, the flat north shore of Lake Bohinj or the Vintgar Gorge boardwalk. For a moderate day, the Savica Waterfall steps or the Vogel ridge. For a serious objective, the two-day climb of Mount Triglav, which has cabled sections and needs a hut booking.
When is the best time to visit Triglav National Park?
June and September. Both have long days and open huts with far fewer people than July and August. High routes including Triglav are open June–October; the Savica waterfall and the Vogel cable car run roughly April or May to mid-October.
Do I need a car?
It helps. Buses reach Bohinj hourly from Ljubljana and Bled, and local summer buses link Bohinj trailheads, but the Soča valley and the Vršič Pass are much easier by car. The Vršič road is tolled and closed in winter.
Can I climb Mount Triglav without a guide?
Yes, there is no legal requirement, but the route is long and has exposed cabled sections. A guide is advised for a first ascent, and you should carry a harness and via ferrata set. Most people take two days with a night in a mountain hut.
Where should I sleep near the park?
Ribčev Laz, Stara Fužina and Ukanc at Lake Bohinj for the lake and Savica; Bohinjska Bistrica for transport links; Bovec or Kobarid for the Soča valley. Mountain huts along the high routes need booking in peak season.
Can I camp in the park?
Not wild. Camping outside designated campsites is prohibited. Use the campsites around Bohinj and Bovec, or mountain huts on the high routes.
