- The memorial marks the students and others who died in 1952 when police fired on protesters demanding Bangla as a state language. The monument is a set of leaning marble-coloured columns; it has been rebuilt more than once since 1952.
- 21 February is Language Martyrs' Day and, since 2000, UNESCO's International Mother Language Day. It is the national day of remembrance, not a day for sightseeing.
- The site sits next to Dhaka Medical College and the university, and political groups use it for rallies: check the news before you go.
- Women often see groups of students and vendors; visit with a companion in the early evening.
