The Biesbosch is a freshwater tidal wetland between the rivers Nieuwe Merwede and Amer, spread over North Brabant and Zuid-Holland and split roughly into a northern and a southern half. Reed beds, willow forest and creeks make it one of the last tidal freshwater deltas in Europe. Beavers were released here from 1988 and are now the park's emblem; white-tailed eagles have nested since 2011. There is no entrance gate and no entry fee — you pay for boats, bikes and guided trips instead.

- Organised sightseeing boats are the practical option for limited mobility; ask about boarding help when booking.
- Marked walking routes near the centres are flat but often unpaved; the long creekside routes are not suitable for wheelchairs.

Nothing. There is no gate and no entry fee. You pay for what you use: canoe rental from about €15, a small motor boat from about €50 a day, a larger sloop from about €150, or an organised boat trip from about €10 per person (2026 estimates).
What are the best hikes in Biesbosch National Park?
The marked routes from the Dordrecht and Drimmelen visitor centres are the reliable ones, from an hour to half a day on flat, often unpaved paths. Routes deeper into the park need a boat, so most people combine a short walk with a canoe or a guided trip. The cycle-and-ferry route to Terheijden is the best land option outside the park.
When is the best time to visit Biesbosch National Park?
April, May and September: mild weather, breeding birds and manageable crowds. July and August are warm but the busiest for boat rental, and November to February is grey and wet with fewer operators open.
Do I need a boat to see the park?
For the creeks and the quietest parts, yes. The visitor centres, museum and their walking routes are reachable by car, bus or waterbus, but the park's core is water and the small creeks are reserved for rowing boats and canoes.
Can I see beavers?
You can see their work almost anywhere along the creeks — gnawed trunks and dams — but the animals themselves are shy and mostly active at dusk. Do not climb on dams or disturb lodges.
Where should I stay near Biesbosch National Park?
Dordrecht is the easiest base without a car, with trains, buses and the waterbus. Drimmelen and Werkendam put you closer to the southern half. Inside the park there is an island farm campsite and two basic boat-only camp spots.
Is Biesbosch National Park good for children?
Yes for short walks, bike rides and calm canoe trips, but the water is the main risk: creeks are cold, banks are soft and there is little fencing. Life jackets and constant supervision are essential.
