  • Argentina ↗Since April 2025 the official, MEP and street ('blue') dollar rates sit within a few percent of each other; a foreign card is usually the best-value way to pay, while ATM withdrawals carry high fixed fees. Rules have changed often — check before you fly.
  • Argentina ↗Patagonia (El Calafate, El Chaltén, Ushuaia) is a November–March trip; in winter many services close and hiking is limited.
  • Argentina ↗Since August 2026 non-resident foreigners must show insurance or pay for non-urgent care at nationally run public hospitals, and Buenos Aires City, Mendoza, Salta, Jujuy and Santa Cruz charge visitors for scheduled care; emergencies are still treated. What to know before you go, how long it takes, when to be there

Know before you go

  • The brightly painted corrugated-metal houses began as workers' housing near the old port, built from scrap and ship paint by Genoese and other immigrant dockworkers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
  • The look is now maintained deliberately for visitors: painters and photo-opportunity performers work the street, and some will ask for a tip after a photo.
  • This is a single pedestrianised stretch plus a couple of adjoining museum blocks, not a barrio you explore freely: treat it as a planned stop, not a place to wander off-route.

Questions, what is nearby, photos and sources

Questions and answers

answered by Voykit editors · dated
Is La Boca safe?

Caminito and the immediate museum blocks are fine in daylight with normal care. The surrounding streets of La Boca have a real theft risk, including in daylight, so this is a there-and-back stop by taxi, not a walking neighbourhood.

Checked 2026-09-28 · Voykit desk

Is it touristy?

Very. The painted street is maintained for visitors, with performers and stalls; go for the colour and the history of the immigrant dockworkers, not for an untouched local scene.

Checked 2026-09-28 · Voykit desk

How do I get there and back?

Taxi, remise or an organised tour both ways. Public transport involves a longer walk through streets that are best avoided with bags or valuables.

Is there an entry fee?

No fee for the street itself; small museums nearby charge their own entry.

Answers come from Voykit editors, not from other travellers.
