Huntington is West Virginia's second-largest city, a flat, grid-planned river town on the Ohio with Marshall University at its centre. It is not a resort stop: the draw is a compact walkable core, a strong small-city food and music scene, low prices and easy access to the New River Gorge and Ohio's Hocking Hills within about two hours. Most travellers pass through on I-64 or the Amtrak Cardinal; one night covers the core, two if you want the parks and museums.

Getting around

Downtown is flat and walkable on a numbered grid: avenues run east–west and rise south of the river, streets run north–south. The Transit Authority runs buses roughly hourly 6:00–18:00 with limited evening service. Uber and Lyft cover the city. A car is needed for the suburbs, Barboursville, the museums in South Hills and any day trip. Railroad tracks cut the city: cross north–south only at the underpasses and bridges (W 14th, 1st, 8th, 10th, Hal Greer Blvd, 20th, 29th, 31st).

Watch out

Safety

Huntington is a normal small US city: the downtown and Marshall campus are fine on foot in daylight, and the main cautions are a few run-down blocks along US-60 in the West End, summer heat, and the need for a car after dark outside the core.
  • The Amtrak Cardinal calls only three days a week (Sunday, Wednesday, Friday): a missed train can mean a 24–48 h wait or a bus to Charleston.
  • HTS has few daily flights and they can be cancelled; keep Charleston (CRW) as a fallback.
  • Some blocks along US-60 in the West End are run-down; keep to the downtown and Southside core after dark.
  • Summer heat and humidity are real; plan museum and mall time for midday.
  • Downtown parking is on-street and in lots; check signs for event-night restrictions near the arena.
