Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Benelux ↗Dutch and Belgian police can ask anyone to show identification (in the Netherlands from age 14): carry the original passport or EU ID card — a photocopy is not accepted.
  • Benelux ↗Tap-in fares, Dutch and Belgian domestic tickets and Luxembourg's free transport all stop at the border: buy an international ticket for cross-border legs, or you will be fined on board.
  • Netherlands ↗The Netherlands is in the EU and the Schengen area; the EU Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors. Check the official EU and Dutch sources for your passport.
  • Netherlands ↗Red or marked bike lanes are for bikes: do not walk or stand in them, and look for cyclists before crossing.
  • Netherlands ↗Amsterdam has local rules on public drinking, cannabis use in some areas and short-term rentals; check the city's current rules and book licensed accommodation.
  • Netherlands ↗The Anne Frank House, Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum and Keukenhof sell timed tickets online only or mostly; book before you arrive rather than queueing.

Weesp is a small fortified town of about 18,000 people on the river Vecht, 12–16 minutes by Sprinter train from Amsterdam and part of the municipality of Amsterdam since 2022. Its moats, bastions and three windmills survive, and the compact centre is walkable in an afternoon. Most travellers use it as a half-day or one-night stop between Amsterdam and the Gooi, or as a cycling base on the Vecht.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk: station to the Vecht quays is about 5 minutes. Rent a bike at the station for the polders, Muiden and Naarden. Bus 49 links the Amsterdam metro at Bijlmer and Gaasperplas, every 30 min (hourly evenings and weekends); bus 110 runs to Muiden, Naarden and Bussum. Only Sprinter trains stop at Weesp; Intercity trains pass through.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Muiden and Muiderslot castle

go

Door to door: About 30–40 min by bike

Cycle along the right bank of the Vecht, about 4 km; or bus 110

Castle entry is ticketed; check hours before cycling out.

Naarden fortress

go

Door to door: About 1 h by bike

Cycle via the Naardermeer side roads, about 11 km; or bus 110

Star-shaped walls are free to walk; the fortress museum is ticketed.

Bussum

caution

Door to door: About 1 h by bike

Cycle along the old canal to 's-Graveland, about 12 km; or bus 110

Mostly a transport and shopping town; go for the cycle route, not the town.

Hilversum

caution

Door to door: About 1–1.5 h

Cycle via Utrechtseweg and the N236 path; or train via Hilversum change

Better by train; the bike route is for fit riders.

Door to door: 12–16 min

Sprinter train, four per hour

The obvious pairing: sleep in Amsterdam, ride out for the afternoon.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Town centre (Nieuwstad / Slijkstraat)

Quays, cafés and the old streets; walk to everything, few beds so book ahead.

Station area (Stationsweg / Herensingel)

5 min walk to the centre, best for a one-night rail stop with bags.

Amsterdam (day-trip base)

Cheaper and easier for beds; 12–16 min by Sprinter, so Weesp works as a day trip.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-risk town; the real issues are bicycles on the quays, unlit polder paths after dark and slippery cobbles in rain. Standard Netherlands advice applies: 112 for emergencies, 0900-8844 for non-urgent police.
  • Only Sprinter trains stop here: check the train type before boarding in Amsterdam.
  • The Torenfort aan de Ossenmarkt is not open to the public; view it from the bridge.
  • Some windmills and the town-hall porcelain museum have limited or seasonal opening: check before you go.
  • The Nigtevecht ferry (pont) runs short hours: Mon–Fri 12:00–13:30 and 15:30–17:30, Sat–Sun 12:00–17:30.
  • A planned A6–A9 motorway may cut through the polders south of town: expect local road works.

Not a trip line yet

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Weesp. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

What we know, and what is coming

On this page

  1. Best months: Apr–Jun, Sep · avoid Nov–Feb (grey and wet) · month by month →
  2. 1 airport and 3 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands
  5. 5 day-trips, door to door
  6. 5 things to watch out for, with emergency numbers

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for AMS: last Sprinter times from Schiphol, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Walking cluster map: station, Vecht quays, Nieuwstad, bastions and windmills.
  3. Place pages with verified opening hours (town hall porcelain museum, windmill Vriendschap, Muiderslot) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Ferry and bus fixtures (Nigtevecht pont, bus 49 and 110) so gates A–D can go green.
