Turkey Run is Indiana's second-oldest state park (1916) and its most crowded: a small area of sandstone canyons cut by glacial meltwater, with hemlock, sycamore and walnut forest and Sugar Creek running through the south end. The draw is not size but texture — narrow slot canyons, ladders, and a pothole called the Punchbowl that you reach on foot in under an hour. The trade-off is access: 11 numbered trails, one entrance road, and a campground that fills on summer weekends. Treat it as a half-day canyon walk, not a wilderness trip, and pair it with quieter Shades State Park 8 km downstream.

How much does it cost to enter Turkey Run State Park?
Indiana charges per vehicle, not per person: roughly US$7 for an Indiana-registered car and US$9–12 for out-of-state plates, per day (2026 estimate, check current rates). Walk-in and bike-in entry is a few dollars per person. Camping, the inn, the pool and horseback rides cost extra.
What are the best hikes in Turkey Run State Park?
Trail 3 is the signature walk: the Punchbowl, Boulder Canyon, ladders and boardwalks in 2–3 hours. Trails 1 and 2 give shorter canyon sections near the inn. Trail 10 to Camel's Back and Trail 11 to Lieber's gravesite are longer, quieter and rougher. All canyon trails are moderate, not flat.
When is the best time to visit Turkey Run State Park?
May, September and October: dry rock, comfortable temperatures and fewer people than midsummer. April is good for wildflowers but muddy. Avoid summer holiday weekends and any day after heavy rain, when canyons are slick and creek levels rise.
Do I need a reservation to visit?
No for day entry — pay at the gatehouse on arrival. Yes for camping and for fall or holiday weekends at the inn; book those ahead. The park can close the gate when car parks are full, usually on summer weekend mornings.
Can I swim or climb at Turkey Run?
No. Swimming in Sugar Creek and climbing the sandstone cliffs are both banned; the creek has sudden drops and the rock has caused fatal falls. Bikes stay on paved trails, pets stay leashed, and there is no hunting or firearms.
Is Turkey Run good for kids?
Yes, with supervision. Trails 1, 2 and 3 have ladders, steps and drop-offs, so hold hands and skip them when wet or icy. The nature center, picnic areas and easy valley paths suit younger children.
How does Turkey Run compare with Shades State Park?
Shades is about 8 km downstream on Sugar Creek, smaller and much quieter, with similar sandstone canyons and rougher trails. Many people do Turkey Run in the morning and Shades in the afternoon, or use Shades when Turkey Run is full.
