Galle is a port city on Sri Lanka's southwest coast, built around a 17th-century Dutch fort — a UNESCO World Heritage site — that sits on an earlier Portuguese fortification. Cafes, guesthouses, boutiques and a colonial-era lighthouse fill the walled town, while beaches like Unawatuna and Jungle Beach lie a short ride away on either side.

Getting around
The fort itself is entirely walkable. Three-wheelers reach nearby beaches; the coastal train from Colombo Fort takes about 2–2.5 h and runs close to the shoreline, and the Southern Expressway cuts the road trip to around 1.5 h.

- December and early January are peak season: fort hotels fill up and prices rise sharply.
