  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Mexico ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Mexico's National Migration Institute (INM) or your nearest Mexican consulate; keep proof of your entry (stamp or digital record) until you leave.
  • Mexico ↗Security advice differs by state: some governments advise against travel to parts of several states. Check your own government's advice for each region on your route.
  • Mexico ↗Do not drink tap water; use bottled or filtered water and ice from reliable places.
  • Mexico ↗Foreign visitors to Quintana Roo (Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Bacalar, Holbox) pay the state VISITAX online at visitax.gob.mx only; lookalike sites add fees.

Campeche is the capital of Campeche state and the old second city of the Yucatán Peninsula, about 155 km south of Mérida on the Gulf of Mexico. Its walled colonial centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it is one of only two cities in North America whose walls still stand. The city is compact, hot and low-key: most travellers see it in two nights between Mérida and Palenque, or as a Tren Maya stop.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Walk the centre; it is small and flat but the heat and humidity decide your pace. Taxis charge by zone — ADO bus station to downtown is roughly M$30. City buses are cheap (about M$6) but small, hot and cramped; drivers make change but refuse large notes. The Tren Ligero tram links the Tren Maya station, the airport and the centre for about M$18, cash or card.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Edzná

go

Door to door: Half day

Taxi or colectivo from Campeche, about 45–60 min each way

Closest major Maya site; go at opening to beat heat and crowds.

Hecelchakán

go

Door to door: Half day

Bus or car north on the highway toward Mérida, about 1 h

Small town with a colonial church and a market; pairs with a Mérida run.

Champotón

caution

Door to door: Half day

Bus down the coast road, about 1 h

Coastal town with seafood; little else for a full day.

Isla Aguada

caution

Door to door: Full day

Bus toward Ciudad del Carmen, about 2 h 30 min

Long for a return day; better as a stop en route to Ciudad del Carmen.

Escárcega

skip

Door to door: Full day

Bus south, about 2 h

Transport junction only; no reason to sleep there.

Xpujil and Calakmul

overnight

Door to door: Overnight

Bus or car south past Escárcega, 4–5 h

Too far for a day trip; sleep near Xpujil and start at dawn.

Candelaria, Campeche

caution

Door to door: Overnight

Car or bus south-east, several hours

Remote river town; only with your own transport and time.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Centro Histórico (inside the walls)

Cheapest beds and everything walkable: plaza, Calle 59, the bastions. Best for two nights without a car.

Malecón / Av. Adolfo Ruiz Cortines

Gulf-front hotels, pricier and cleaner; 15–25 min walk to the plaza, taxis are short and cheap.

Avenida Gobernadores

Modern strip north of the centre: supermarkets, banks, chain and local restaurants. Useful if you have a car.

Watch out

Safety

Campeche is one of Mexico's calmer state capitals and the tourist centre is fine on foot by day. Real risks are heat, uneven pavements and unlit side streets after dark; use taxis at night and keep to the centre and malecón.
  • Heat and humidity most of the year: do the walls and forts before 11:00 and after 17:00.
  • Rain peaks Sep–Oct; afternoon downpours are normal Jun–Oct.
  • Watch food handling at small places, especially street stalls and market stands.
  • The ADO terminal is small with understaffed counters and long lines: buy onward tickets a day ahead.
  • The ADO terminal restroom charges about M$7 (≈ under US$1) and has no A/C in the waiting area.
  • Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov on this coast; check forecasts if you are driving the coast road.

What this guide covers so far, and its sources

Not a trip line yet

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Campeche. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

What we know, and what is coming

On this page

  1. Best months: Nov–Mar · avoid Apr–Jun (hottest), Sep–Oct (rain peak) · month by month →
  2. 1 airport and 3 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands
  5. 7 day-trips, door to door
  6. 6 things to watch out for, with emergency numbers

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for CPE: taxi and Tren Ligero options field-checked, late-arrival fallback.
  2. Walking clusters inside the walls: plaza and cathedral, Calle 59, the bastions, the land and sea gates.
  3. Place pages with verified hours and prices (Fort San Miguel museum, Baluarte de Santiago, Baluarte de La Soledad) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Tren Maya and ADO timetable fixtures so onward legs to Mérida and Palenque can go green.
