Nilpena Ediacara protects the beds that produced some of the earliest complex animal life on Earth, more than 500 million years old and long before the dinosaurs. It was proclaimed in 2021 and opened with visitor facilities in 2023, absorbing the old Ediacara Conservation Park and 60,000 hectares bought from Nilpena station. There is no self-guided access: you see the fossils on a ranger-led tour on set days, and there is nowhere to sleep inside the park.

M2 Northern Connector, then A1 Port Wakefield Road north, then B83 Flinders Ranges Way past Beltana to the park gateway.

How much does it cost to enter Nilpena Ediacara National Park?
Entry is by guided tour only, at about A$80 per person, booked in advance on the Parks SA website. There is no separate gate fee because you cannot enter on your own. Tours run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays (check current days and price when booking).
What are the best hikes in Nilpena Ediacara National Park?
There are no self-guided hikes. The visit is a ranger-led tour of the fossil beds with short walks, including the rise at Randell Lookout. If you want long trails, base yourself in Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park instead.
When is the best time to visit Nilpena Ediacara National Park?
April, May and September give mild days and clear skies. Avoid December to February, when 40 °C+ heat is common and tours can be affected. Winter nights are cold but days are usually sunny.
Do I need to book, and can I just turn up?
You must book in advance; there is no walk-in access and no self-guided entry. Tours operate only on set days, so plan your drive around the booking.
Where can I stay near the park?
There is no accommodation in the park. Leigh Creek, about 30 minutes away, has the nearest rooms and fuel; Beltana and the Flinders Ranges towns have station stays and caravan parks.
Can I collect fossils?
No. Removing or disturbing fossils is prohibited and is the reason the park is not open to free access. Leave every rock and fossil where it lies.
