Know before you go

  • The Matenadaran holds one of the world’s largest collections of Armenian manuscripts, some from the 5th century onward, in a building finished in the 1950s.
  • A short guided tour is usually available in English (confirm times and price).
  • The steps outside have statues of scholars and a large statue of Mesrop Mashtots, the man credited with creating the Armenian alphabet around 405 AD.
  • Manuscripts are shown in dim rooms: bring a jacket in summer for the AC.
