  • Opened in 1849 (≈ US$6), it was the first permanent bridge over the Danube in Budapest and the reason the two banks began to grow into one city.
  • The original was blown up by retreating German forces in January 1945; the bridge standing today is a 1949 reconstruction on the original piers and design.
  • The stone lions at each end are a piece of local folklore claiming they have no tongues — look closely and you will see they do.
  • The bridge is lit at night; the best photograph is from either bank at dusk, not from the bridge itself.
