Shawinigan is a small Mauricie city of about 50,000 built on hydroelectric power, roughly 30 minutes by road or bus from Trois-Rivières and 2.5 hours by train from Montréal. Its draw is industrial heritage, a national historic church and river country, not a big-city break. One full day covers the core; add a second for La Mauricie National Park.

Getting around

The downtown grid is walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end. For Grand-Mère, Lac-à-la-Tortue, Saint-Jean-des-Piles or the national park you need a car or taxi; RTCS buses run daily but sparsely. VIA Rail stops at Shawinigan station on Chemin du CN, one train per week in each direction.

Safety

Shawinigan is a small city and most visits pass without incident. Winter driving on Routes 155 and 157 can be difficult: check road conditions before setting out, and take care on unlit stretches outside the centre at night.
  • VIA Rail to Shawinigan runs one day per week: check the timetable before you build a trip around it.
  • Many sights outside downtown have no bus service; budget for a car or taxi.
  • Winter closes or shortens hours at river and park attractions: check before travelling Nov–Apr.
  • Prices are in Canadian dollars before sales tax; the bill is higher than the menu.
