Mödling is a town of about 20,700 people on Vienna's southern edge, sitting under Mt. Anninger in the Vienna Woods. It was Vienna's 24th district from 1938 to 1954 and has been its own city since. In the Biedermeier years it drew painters, poets and composers, and Beethoven spent summers here. Today it is a rail suburb of Vienna with a walkable old centre, two castle sites in the woods and a fast S-Bahn link into the city.

Getting around

The centre is small and walkable. Three city bus routes start in front of the station and cover the town; single ticket about €1, day ticket about €2 (check). Nextbike rental bikes are available, free for the first 30 minutes, about €1/hr (check). Trains run to Vienna roughly every 30 minutes; the S-Bahn ride to Wien Meidling is about 20 minutes (check).

Mödling is a low-risk town; the real issues are trail footing in the woods, short winter daylight and pickpockets on crowded Vienna trains.
  • No international trains stop at Mödling; change at Wien Meidling, Wien Hauptbahnhof or Wiener Neustadt.
  • The airport link needs a change at Wien Rennweg; allow about 50 minutes (check).
  • Trails in the Föhrenberge can be icy or muddy outside spring and autumn; wear shoes with grip.
  • Some sights keep short, appointment-only hours: check before you go.
