Charyn Canyon is a dry river canyon in the steppe east of Almaty, cut by the Charyn river coming down from the Tien Shan. The Valley of Castles — rock towers that gave the canyon its local nickname, "our Grand Canyon" — is the one part you can walk from the gate. Beyond it the Witches Gorge and Miocene Gorge trails are longer and rougher, and the visitor centre runs tours to all three. Infrastructure is thin: a small campsite, a few food stalls at the headquarters, and no shuttle network, so most visitors come as a day trip from Almaty or as a stop on the way to the Kolsai Lakes.

How much does it cost to enter Charyn Canyon?
Park entry is charged per person at the gate, with a higher rate for foreign visitors than for Kazakhstan residents, plus a separate vehicle fee. As a 2026 estimate, budget about 1,000–2,000 KZT per foreign adult and 500–1,500 KZT per car; the park-run vehicle through the canyon is a further 2,000–5,000 KZT per person. Rates change, so treat these as a band and check at the gate.
What are the best hikes in Charyn Canyon?
The Valley of Castles is the one to do: about 5 km round trip, flat, and the only trail you can walk straight from the car park. Add the short climb to the Yellow Canyon lookout for the best view. If you have more time, the Witches Gorge (about 5.4 km) is rougher, and the Miocene Gorge (about 13 km) is a half-day route best done with the visitor centre tour.
When is the best time to visit Charyn Canyon?
May, June, September and October. Days are warm and dry, nights are cold, and the light is clear. July and August regularly pass 40°C in the canyon, so if you go then, start at dawn. Winter is possible but the steppe road ices up and the wind makes it feel far colder than the thermometer suggests.
Can I visit Charyn Canyon without a car?
Not easily. There is no reliable public bus to the canyon; the marshrutka to Kegen that some guides mention has not been running. The usual options are a shared taxi from Sayakhat bus station in Almaty (negotiate the whole car, roughly 8,000–10,000 KZT), an organised day tour, or hitching. Do not plan to walk the 10 km branch road from the highway to the gate.
Can I combine Charyn Canyon with the Kolsai Lakes?
Yes, and most people do. The lakes and Kaindy are about 92 km further east on the same road, so a two-day trip from Almaty — canyon on day one, lakes on day two, sleeping in Saty — is the standard plan. Doing both in a single day means a very long drive with little time at either.
Is there anywhere to stay at Charyn Canyon?
There is one small campsite at the park, and it fills in summer. Most visitors sleep in Almaty and come as a day trip, or stay in Saty village on the way to the Kolsai Lakes. Guesthouses in Aksay village on the right bank are a closer fallback.
