Ani is a ruined medieval city on a plateau above the Akhurian river gorge, 44 km east of Kars and directly on the closed border with Armenia. It was the Armenian capital from 961 and its rose-pink tuff churches, cathedral and walls survive as an open-air site rather than a museum. UNESCO listed it in 2016. There is no accommodation and no mobile signal on site, so it works as a day trip from Kars, on foot, in daylight.

How much does it cost to enter Ani?
The entrance fee was €8 per person in 2025, paid at the gate; ask for a ticket rather than handing over cash. The return bus from Kars cost 100 TL in 2025, pay on board. Treat both as 2026 estimates and check current prices before you go.
What are the best hikes in Ani?
The site itself is a flat 2–3 hour circuit from Lion Gate past the cathedral to the south edge. The two real walks are the rocky scramble up to the citadel for gorge views, and the roughly 2 km riverbank walk east to the Red Church. Both are unshaded and unmarked in places.
When is the best time to visit Ani?
May, June and September: mild, usually clear, and the steppe is green or golden rather than frozen. July and August are hot and exposed with almost no shade. December to February is bitterly cold at 1,340 m, with snow and ice on the paths.
How do I get to Ani from Kars?
A bus leaves Kars at 09:00 from in front of the Gazi Ahmet Muhtar Paşa Museum and returns at 12:45, about 45–60 minutes each way. For a longer visit, hire a taxi for the day through your hotel. The highway runs to Ocaklı village, then a lane for the last 500 m.
Can I stay overnight at Ani?
No. There is no visitor accommodation at Ani or in Ocaklı village, and camping is not permitted. Stay in Kars and make it a day trip.
Is there mobile signal at Ani?
No. As of December 2025 there is no signal at the site or on the approach road once you leave Kars, and none on the Armenian side of the border either.
Can I cross into Armenia from Ani?
No. The border runs along the Akhurian river at the foot of the site and is closed. You can look across the gorge but cannot cross.
