Białowieża Forest is the last large remnant of the lowland forest that once covered most of Europe, kept largely intact because Polish-Lithuanian kings and later Russian tsars used it as a private hunting ground rather than farmland. The Polish side became a national park in 1934, and the innermost sanctuary — the strictly protected core — is fenced and open only to guided tours and researchers. Everything else is waymarked forest road and trail you can walk or cycle freely. The forest is also the place where the European bison was brought back from the edge of extinction: every living bison descends from animals bred here, and a show reserve on road 689 gives reliable close views when the wild herds stay out of sight. The park sits in Podlaskie, on the Belarus border, so carry ID on any trail near the boundary.

The waymarked trails outside the strictly protected core are free. Entering the core means a guided tour, seen at about 225 zł per group tour, booked at the park museum in the palace park or through a local operator. The bison show reserve is a separate 20 zł (12 zł reduced).
What are the best hikes in Białowieża National Park?
The guided core walk is the one that matters: flat, about 3 hours, roughly 7 km on the edge of the old-growth sanctuary. On your own, the Żebra Żubra waymarked network gives 2–5 hour walks and bike loops outside the core. Both are easy walking; the forest, not the gradient, is the challenge.
