Chain O' Lakes is a small Indiana state park built around 11 kettle lakes — basins left by melting ice blocks about 10,000 years ago and linked by channels, so you can paddle from one to the next. It is a half-day stop, not a destination park: eight easy-to-moderate trails total just over 10 miles, the signature walk is Trail 2 along the north shore of Bowen Lake to a Native American burial mound, and the beach, boat rental and Nature Center sit within a short drive of the gate on CR-75S. Come on a weekday morning in May, June, September or October; July and August weekends fill the beach and campground by mid-morning. Winter is quiet but icy and short on open services. A minimum-security prison occupies the eastern side of the park with no perimeter fence — it is not a visitor area.
