Ozark National Forest
Go for the trails and the free dispersed camping, not for a single headline sight: drive the Sylamore district for Blanchard Springs and the White Rock loop, and skip summer afternoons when heat and crowds peak.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

The Ozark National Forest spreads across roughly 4,500 km² of the Arkansas Ozarks, mostly oak and hickory ridges cut by the Mulberry and White river systems. It was proclaimed in 1908 and is run by the USDA Forest Service, not the National Park Service, which is why there is no gate and no entrance fee. What you pay for is optional: a Blanchard Springs Caverns tour, a developed campground, or nothing at all if you camp dispersed. The Sylamore district around Mountain View holds the cave, the springs and the White Rock Mountain loop; the Boston Mountains and Mulberry valley hold the long-distance Ozark Highlands Trail and the swimming holes. Five designated wilderness areas have no roads at all. Summer is hot and humid enough to change your plans, so the walking season runs from March to May and September to November.

Time out
Finding the local time zone…
Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- Blanchard Springs Caverns has a developed visitor area and a paved approach; check which tour suits limited mobility.
- Several campgrounds and overlooks are reachable by car with short, level walks.
- Most trails here are dirt, rocky and steep; few are suitable for wheelchairs.
Visiting lightly
- Use existing fire rings and keep fires small; buy local firewood to avoid moving pests.
- Camp on durable ground and bury human waste well away from water.
- Pack out everything, including food scraps, so wildlife does not learn to raid camps.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to enter Ozark National Forest?
Nothing. There is no entrance fee for the forest itself. You pay only for extras: a Blanchard Springs Caverns tour (roughly $15–30 per person, 2026 estimate), a developed campground ($10–25 a night), or nothing at all if you camp dispersed.
What are the best hikes in Ozark National Forest?
The White Rock Mountain rim trail for views in 2–3 hours, a section of the Ozark Highlands Trail for a longer walk, and the short paths around Blanchard Springs. Most trails are dirt and rocky, so wear proper shoes.
When is the best time to visit Ozark National Forest?
April, May and October. Spring brings wildflowers and full streams; October gives fall colour and the most comfortable hiking. July and August are hot and humid, and January is cold with bare trees.
Do I need a permit to camp?
No permit for most dispersed camping on forest land. Developed campgrounds may take reservations in season, and fire bans can be in force in dry spells, so check before you go.
Is Ozark National Forest the same as the Buffalo National River?
No. They are separate areas in the Arkansas Ozarks. The Buffalo National River is a protected river corridor with its own rules; the national forest is Forest Service land with free camping and no entrance fee.
